Image Restorations of High Photometric Quality

An image restoration technique is described that achieves high photometric accuracy for both stars and distributed emission. The technique makes use of observer-supplied information that some objects in the field are point sources and thereby eliminates the ringing and photometric bias that arise with conventional restoration procedures. A hierarchy of codes is described based on this two-channel decomposition of astronomical images. The more sophisticated of these codes incorporate simultaneous estimation of the PSF and are thus especially relevant for ground-based imaging. Observing programs are described in which these codes effectively transfer the resolution of HST to ground-based images.
