At the moment most of my time is spent studying the host galaxies of powerful AGN - quasars and radio galaxies - to try to find out how the properties of the host affect those of the active nucleus (and vice versa), and also how galaxy evolution is related to that of the AGN population. This has involved ground-based imaging and spectroscopy and, most recently, two large HST projects using WFPC2 and NICMOS. However, I started out as a radio astronomer, and I'm particularly interested in what causes some AGN to be radio loud while the majority are radio quiet. In pursuit of this I also do a lot of work on Seyfert galaxies and RQQs with the VLA and other radio telescopes.
