I am an astronomer with an interest in applying advanced computer and information techniques to scientific problems. Currently I'm the Deputy Division Head of the Information Technology Services Division of the Space Telescope Science Institute. IT Services leads the development and support of the STScI's information technology.

Other activities of note:

  • The Spike planning and scheduling system. This is a general framework for planning and scheduling which is used by more astronomical observatories than any other system. Spike is used by HST, FUSE, ESO VLT, Subaru, Chandra, and others.

  • The Project to Re-Engineer Space Telescope Observing (PRESTO). This process improvement project has been recognized by NASA and the astronomical community for increasing the efficiency of HST observing while simultaneously increasing the participation and satisfaction of astronomers using HST.

  • I was one of the chief architects and implementers of HST's proposing and observing tools such as RPSS and RPS2 which have set the standard for modern astronomical observations. I also collaborated in a joint STScI-GSFC project which developed the next generation of observing tools, the Scientist's Expert Assistant, which led to the deployment of the Astronomer's Proposal Tools used by HST.
  • I led the Vision 2000 Planning and Scheduling Product Development Team. Vision 2000 was a NASA/contractor initiative which streamlined and modernized HST mission and science operations.

  • Program Organizing Committee of the Astronomical Data Analysis Software and Systems (ADASS) Conference from ADASS VII - ADASS XVII.
