Lick LGS AO Tools.

Here are a few quick software tools I have developed for use with the Lick Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system.

Setup Stars

For LGS observations, you need a 9th magnitude setup star within 1.5 degrees of each of your science targets. My setupstar.pl script automatically queries the SAO catalog at Vizier and returns several possible candidates for your use. This script merely requires you to have Perl and the lynx web browser. Usage:

The argument you supply can be any SIMBAD-recognized object name or just specify RA and Dec. You can then pick setup stars which are around 9-9.5 mag and preferably red (spectral types K or M) if possible.

Target List

Air Force Laser Clearance

You must submit a list of RA and Dec in 1950 coords ahead of time to Air Force Space Command to get clearance to propagate the laser. The lgstable.pl script will produce an appropriately formatted table for you.

The input file is just a text file containing one SIMBAD-resolvable name per line. Note that as of Fall 2004, you have to include the setup stars in the Air Force list explicitly, so make sure to find those all first!

Lick target list

You can also run licktargetlist.pl to generate a Lick-formatted target list. It works exactly the same way, just formats the output differently.
