This is a paper version of the ODF help. If possible, refer to the HTML version, which contains images
and hypertext links.
The ODF Converters convert the outputs of SciSim to an ODF format. It forms part of the XMM-
Newton Science Simulator SciSim for the XMM-Newton satellite.
This document contains information speci c to ODF Converters only; for generic information about
SciSim, see the SciSim User Guide.

1 Overview
The ODF converters are a set of tools which convert the outputs of SciSim instruments into FITS les
which conform to the speci cation for the Observation Data File (ODF) component les [1]. There are
5 such tools:
 EPIC MOS ODF Converter modf ; produces the relevant EPIC MOS ODF component les
from the EPIC MOS output of ESIM.
 EPIC PN ODF Converter podf ; produces the relevant EPIC p-n ODF component les from
the EPIC p-n output of ESIM.
 RGS ODF Converter rodf ; produces the relevant RGS ODF component les from the RFC
output of RFCSIM.
 Optical Monitor ODF Converter oodf ; produces the Optical MonitorImaging Mode File
from the OSIMoutput.
 S/C Attitude ODF Converter hodf ; produces the Spacecraft Attitude History File from the
SPSIMoutput.
 Sources Converter src2 t; produces a FITS representation of sources of the simulation
input.
1.1 EPIC-MOS ODF Converter
The EPIC MOS ODF Converter is capable of processing both the EPIC MOS imaging and timing mode
data generated by ESIM.
The EPIC MOS ODF Converter tool takes the output from ESIM and produces an EPIC MOS ODF
component le for each node of each active CCD. If a CCD is operating in imaging mode then an imaging
mode event list le [1] is produced. If a CCD is operating in timing mode then a timing mode event list
le [1] is produced.
An EPIC MOS auxiliary le [1], containing the frame information for the run (exposure), is also produced.
1.2 EPIC-PN ODF Converter
The EPIC p-n ODF Converter is capable of processing both the EPIC p-n imaging and timing mode
data generated by ESIM.
The EPIC p-n ODF Converter tool takes the output from ESIM and produces an EPIC p-n ODF
component le for each active CCD. If a CCD is operating in imaging mode then an imaging mode event
list le [1] is produced. If a CCD is operating in timing mode then a timing mode event list le [1] is
produced.
An EPIC p-n auxiliary le [1], containing the frame information for the run (exposure), is also produced.

1.3 RGS ODF Converter
The RGS ODF Converter is capable of processing both the RGS spectroscopy and High Time Resolution
(HTR) mode data generated by RFCSIM.
The RGS ODF Converter tool takes the output from RFCSIM and produces an RGS ODF component
le for each active CCD. If a CCD is operating in spectroscopy mode then a spectroscopy mode event list
le [1] is produced. If a CCD is operating in HTR mode then a HTR mode event list le [1] is produced.
An RGS auxiliary le [1], containing the frame information for the run (exposure), is also produced.
1.4 OM ODF Converter
The Optical Monitor ODF Converter converts an image le produced by OSIM into an image le that is
compliant with the de nition in [1].
1.5 S/C Attitude ODF Converter
The S/C Attitude ODF Converter converts the output of the S/C simulator into a Spacecraft Attitude
History le that is compliant with the de nition in [1].
1.6 Sources Converter
The Sources Converter converts the ASCII le containing the sky sources into a FITS le with a
format similar to the other ODF constituents.The generated FITS le contains a table of sources with
the properties: RA, Dec, Flux.
This tool can be used to compare the camera output with the sources that generated the camera response.
2 Usage
2.1 Filenames
The names to be allocated to the EPIC MOS, EPIC p-n, and RGS ODF component are de ned by the
simulation itself. That is, given the input for the simulators, the ODF converters produce FITS le names
that are compliant with the ODF ICD [1].
The ODF converters processes arguments and input les as de ned in the SciSim User Guide with the
exception that they do not produce an output le with a name de ned by the User. Therefore, the
command-line option:
-o outputfile
has no meaning for the ODF Converters.
