Gazaryan S.V., Ivanitsky A.N. 2005. On the faunal and taxonomic status of the Mediterranean horseshoe bat Rhinolophus euryale in the West Transcaucasia. Plecotus et al. 8: 54-61. Twenty five records of R. euryale from the West Transcaucasia (Table 1), including 10 unknown in the literature, are described. In Russia the species was found in two localities (Fig. 1, 4, 9), and since 1958 it has not been encountered any more. The rest of records are from Georgia, from southern slopes of the Caucasus, except for the finding in Chakvistavi (Fig. 1, 11) located in the north-west of Armenian Upland, that is in southern part of the region. In summer R. euryale inhabits mainly caves, sometimes man-made structures. So, a maternity colony has been found in an old church (Fig. 1, 13), and single specimens have been observed under the cupola of a pumping station and in a limestone kiln (Fig. 1, 19). Large colonies of R. euryale remain rare in the West Transcaucasia, however, we succeeded in finding two colonies of more than 100 individuals each (Fig. 1, 18, 20). Current status of the population occurring in Georgia does not excite apprehension, nevertheless relative abundance and numbers of this species need more precise. In Russian part of the range, R. euryale has probably disappeared, however, it could resettle this area after appropriate measures for protection of caves near Sochi. As revealed by comparison of pelage colour in the specimens from Abkhazia (Fig. 1, 4-10) and museum specimens from Europe and East Transcaucasia, R. e. nordmanni Satunin, 1911 seems to be a synonym of the nominative form.
