. Longtime Astronomy contributor Chris Schur from Payson, Arizona, sent in this photo of Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) he took October 4, 2013. He used a 12.5-inch homebuilt Newtonian reflector at f/5, an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera, and Astrodon color filters. The total exposure time was 75 minutes, and he aligned all images on the comet's nucleus to keep ISON sharp. The effect of that technique is trailed stars. Schur reported that the comet was faint but distinctly visible through 8x50 binoculars. Chris Schur
