1. Analysis of extended sources or in the vicinity of moderately bright sources
XMM-Newton Science Analysis System . ... Meta Index / Home Page / Description / Out-of-time events . If withoutoftime =y the task does not create the ``normal'' events file but uses the input file instead to create an event file where all events are treated as out-of-time events. ... Similarly, for Full Frame and Extended Full Frame modes (currently) the 11 rows closest to the CAMEX are set bad onboard but sources in these rows may also cause unrecognized out-of-time events. ...

5. Silicon Nanoparticles: Source of Extended Red Emission?
We have reviewed the characteristics of the extended red emission (ERE) as observed in many dusty astronomical environments, in particular, the diffuse interstellar medium of the Galaxy. ... We have compared the photoluminescence properties of a variety of carbon- and silicon-based materials proposed as sources for the ERE with the observationally established constraints. We found that silicon nanoparticles provide the best match to the spectrum and to the efficiency requirement of the ERE. ...

... Usually, H I is seen as bright emission against a darker background, but under the right viewing conditions, it can also be seen as dark absorption against a brighter background. In the case where the background is itself H I emission, the hydrogen is said to be self-absorbed, and the radiative transfer process is termed H I self-absorption (HISA). ...
