. Each of the colorful objects in this image illustrates one of 30 merging galaxies. The contours in the individual galaxies show the signal strength from carbon monoxide while the color represents the motion of gas. Gas that is moving away from us appears red while the blue color shows gas that is approaching. The contours together with the transition from red to blue indicate a gaseous disk that is rotating about the center of the galaxy. ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO)/SMA/CARMA/IRAM/J. Ueda et al.

. Schematic illustration of the magnification by a galaxy. A massive object between us and the supernova bends light rays much as a glass lens can focus light. As more light rays are directed toward the observer than would be without the lens, the supernova appears magnified. Kavli IPMU

. An irregular ring of radiation can be seen around the distant galaxy in the center of this 2.2-micron CCD photograph, made with the 10-meter Keck telescope on Hawaii. The lensing galaxy is associated with radio source 3C 220.3. The radiation of the ring originates from an extremely distant galaxy-in-formation and is a result of the gravitational-lens effect. Just below the lensing galaxy a neighboring galaxy can be seen, which also contributes to the lensing effects. ESA and the W. M. Keck Observatory

The powerful gravity of a galaxy embedded in a massive cluster of galaxies in this Hubble Space Telescope image is producing multiple images of a single distant supernova far behind it. Both the galaxy and the galaxy cluster are acting like a giant cosmic lens, bending and magnifying light from the supernova behind them, an effect called gravitational lensing. ...

... Some of the cat-like features are actually distant galaxies whose light has been stretched and bent by the large amounts of mass contained in foreground galaxies. This is an effect called "gravitational lensing," predicted by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity that is celebrating its 100th anniversary. X-rays from Chandra show that the two "eye" galaxies and the smaller galaxies associated with them are slamming into one another in a giant galactic collision. ...

. Globular clusters like NGC 6535, found 22,000 light-years away in the constellation Serpens, are groups of ancient stars. A new study indicates these tightly-bound populations are almost as old as the universe itself. ESA/Hubble NASA, Acknowledgement: Gilles Chapdelaine

This huge elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) is the closest such galaxy to Earth, at a distance of about 12 million light-years. Observations with ESO s Very Large Telescope in Chile have discovered a new class of dark globular star clusters around this galaxy. ... Normal globulars are marked in blue and globulars showing similar properties to dwarf galaxies are in green. The dark globulars appear very similar to other globulars around this galaxy but contain much more mass. ...
