. This schematic diagram shows how scientists think the universe has evolved from the Big Bang to the present day. Data from the UKIRT, VLT, and Subaru observatories allowed astronomers to take four precise and comparable snapshots of the universe when it was, 2, 4, 6 and 9 billion years old, each containing hundreds of star-forming galaxies. By comparing the different snapshots, astronomers were able to accurately track what has changed over the past 11 billion years. // illustration by CXC/NASA/NOAO/KIPAC

. Saturn's D ring, the innermost of the planet's rings, sports an intriguing structure that appears to be a wavy, or "vertically corrugated," spiral. This continuously changing ring structure provides circumstantial evidence for a possible recent collision event in the rings. NASA / JPL / Space Science Institute

. NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander team selected a rock informally named "Headless" for an attempt to slide it aside with the lander's robotic arm. Moving rocks is not among the many tasks the arm was designed to do, but if the maneuver can be accomplished, scientists on the Phoenix team hope to check whether the depth to a subsurface ice layer is any different underneath the area where the rock now sits. . Enceladus, imaged by Cassini in 2006, shows off its tortured south polar terrain, crosscut by the roughly parallel furrows and ridges called "tiger stripes." The fissures discharge plumes of ice crystals and gases. Originally, it was suggested that pockets of liquid water were the source of these plumes. Now, a new model offers another explanation. . Recent data from the Cassini spacecraft revealed geyser-like plumes, intense heat flux, and tectonic features including large fractures that cut across the pole, a ring of ridges (red), and radial rifts (blue) on Enceladus, imaged above. The origin of these tectonic features and the relation among the tectonic features, the heat transport, and the plumes is discussed by using a unified thermo-mechanical model of Enceladus. This false color image, taken by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander's Surface Stereo Imager, was taken on the 131st martian day, or sol, of the mission (October 7, 2008). The image shows color variations of the trench, informally named "La Mancha," and reveals the ice layer beneath the soil surface. The trench's depth is about 1.9 inches (5 cm) deep. The color outline of the shadow at the bottom of the image is a result of sun movement with the combined use of infrared, green, and blue filters. ...
