The scene is heavily eroded terrain to the west of a small canyon in the Nili Fossae region of Mars. . Longtime Astronomy contributor Chris Schur from Payson, Arizona, sent in this photo of Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) he took October 4, 2013. He used a 12.5-inch homebuilt Newtonian reflector at f/5, an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera, and Astrodon color filters. The total exposure time was 75 minutes, and he aligned all images on the comet's nucleus to keep ISON sharp. The effect of that technique is trailed stars.
