Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) continues to move. ... Photographer Chris Schur reported, What a spectacular sight in my 11x80 binoculars! While the comet was quite faint, a short 14; tail could be seen, along with the gorgeous blue and orange colors of the star and planet. Schur captured the image October 14, 2013, from Payson, Arizona, using a 3.2-inch Zeiss apochromatic refractor at f/4.8, a Canon XTi DSLR, an ISO setting of 800, and 10 minutes of exposure. . These jets, known as spicules, were captured in an SDO image April 25, 2010. Combined with the energy from ripples in the magnetic field, they may contain enough energy to power the solar wind that streams from the Sun toward Earth at 1.5 million miles (2.4 million kilometers) per hour. . Astroimager Damian Peach from Hampshire, England, captured Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) on October 27 through a 17-inch PlaneWave Corrected Dall-Kirkham reflector. He attached an FLI PL-6303E CCD camera and took eight 2-minute luminance images, which he combined with single 2-minute images through red, green, and blue filters. He noted the Last Quarter Moon was present. Damian Peach

. Scientists want to understand what causes giant explosions in the Sun's atmosphere, the corona, such as this one. The eruptions are called coronal mass ejections (CME), and they can travel toward Earth to disrupt human technologies in space. To better understand the forces at work, a team of researchers used NASA data to study a precursor of CMEs called coronal cavities. // Credit: NASA/Solar Dynamics Observatory

This annotated artistтАЩs impression shows the Milky Way Galaxy. The blue halo of material surrounding the galaxy indicates the expected distribution of the mysterious dark matter. New measurements based on the movements of stars show that the amount of dark matter in this region around the Sun is far smaller than predicted and have indicated that there is no significant dark matter at all in our neighborhood. ...

Although it s still invisible to the naked eye, Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) is brightening as expected. ... And, as we see here, long-exposure images also show the comet s greenish color. Adam Block captured this image through a 32-inch Schulman Telescope and an SBIG STX-16803 CCD camera. This illustration shows the disk of our Milky Way Galaxy surrounded by a fain, extended halo of old stars. Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope to observe the nearby Andromeda Galaxy serendipitously identified a dozen foreground stars in the Milky Way halo. They measured the first sideways motions (represented by the arrows) for such distant halo stars. The motions indicate the possible presence of a shell in the halo, which may have formed from the accretion of a dwarf galaxy. ...
