Roll Waves in Gas-Liquid Flows

The structure of roll waves generated in gas-liquid flows as the nonlinear stage of flow instability is investigated. It is shown that roll wave generation is the common feature of different types of multi-phase flows such as stratified flows, slug flows and bubbly flows. The transition from a separated flow into a slug flow regime by roll wave developing is described in the frame of the two-layer shallow water equations. For bubbly liquid with energy supply of the gas phase, the necessary conditions of nonlinear wave packet generation are derived. The patterns of roll waves in reacting heterogeneous media are discussed.
