The automatic controls for the A Class are on the wand on the steering wheel which gives you more room in the front cabin and there is plenty of space, as well as three seats, in the rear.

There is a 5.8inch tablet screen controlled from a central dial at your fingertips to prevent you stretching too far to access phone, radio and sat nav.

There is, of course, Bluetooth, and air con and the A Class is very friendly to an iPod because of the company’s special relationship with Apple.

The boot is adequate and the 60/40 seat split means you can easily get more storage space if you need it certainly plenty of room for a set of golf clubs.

Safety features abound this is, after all, a Mercedes Benz and include collision response assist, crash responsive

emergency lighting, an active bonnet to minimise pedestrian injury, tyre pressure monitoring, a child seat recognition sensor and attention assist.

There is a huge choice of engines available including the 1.5 litre diesel automatic, which is likely to be the most popular due to its fuel economy, emissions figures and the price.

It is a smooth, easy drive with plenty of capability in any conditions. But put the A Class into Sport mode and it pulls the stops out, giving you the kind of response you are looking for.

There are manual paddles set behind the steering wheel so if you fancy a bit of fun, you can opt to use them or just stay in automatic and let the car do it all for you.
