Fields of Research
Innovative development of modern scientific basic of cartography is connected with the Department, with the formation and activity of the geographical cartography scientific school. In recent decades, the main direction of scientific work has become the linking of traditions and innovations, the formation of the new concept of integration of cartography, geoinformatics and remote sensing, so that research in the Department covers a broad range of topics, approaches, and sites of study. The teachers and researchers of the Department for his work developingin three areas of research: theoretical problems of cartography; methods and technologies of the geographical mapping; the development of cartographic education.
Main accomplished research - The priority research area - mapping geosystems based on the integration of geoinformatics, cartography and remote sensing.
Three areas of research: theoretical problems of cartography; methods and technologies of the geographical mapping; the development of cartographic education clearly show the preserving of the former traditions in thematic mapping, the use of its wide experience and new life of its achievements in the WEB- mapping.
Geoinformatics and GIS mapping, resource and educational GIS, multimedia cartography, development of new software products, the introduction of WEB- mapping and geoportals in the research and study .
Much attention is given to social and economic mapping, research and mapping of natural resources and environmental capacity of lands.

Future research activities
The department develops new methods and techniques of GIS mapping. Future research is concerned with environmental systems and socio- economic systems, their processes and interactions in the present and past, as well as in the uncertain future. The study should be based on new scientific data, new technologies, and theoretical solutions.
Advanced research is in the field of further development and integration of geographic cartography theory and methods, geoinformatics and remote sensing; the use of satellite and aircraft monitoring in geography and cartography; creating regional and local GIS; WEB- mapping; satellite positioning systems; the development of geographic information and online technologies, thematical geoportals.

International relations
Training program of students is an integral part of the study and the most important form of training highly qualified specialists. Every year since 2005 the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics in conjunction with the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies in Austria organize the Training Course in the Institute of Digital Image Processing, Remote Sensing Group, the 3rd form students to acquire the habits in polar remote sensing, glacier monitoring, glacier cartography and GIS.
Our students have also their trainees in the University of Maryland. The department has cooperation with Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, UK
