Department of Environmental Management

Founded in 1987 by full member of Academy of Sciences of the USSR Konstantin Konstantinovich Markov and corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Andrey Petrovich Kapitsa. From 1987 to 2011 Department is headed by Doctor of Geography, Professor A.P. Kapitsa.
Since 2011, the department is headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor Mikhail V. Slipenchuk.

Career opportunities
Most of our graduates are employed by different departments of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental, by institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, by regional and district departments of Environmental Management, by scientific departments of natural reserved territories, by environmental departments of industry objects, by International Environmental Organization, by the higher and secondary educational institutions connected with geographical and environmental education.

Main accomplished and current research: geographical bases of environmental management; landscape ecology; evaluation of the ecological state of the landscape; conceptual bases of management of natural and cultural heritage at the national level; trust management of cultural and natural heritage in Russia; the concept of a national park "Russian Arctic"; the concept of the structure and functioning of ecological GIS in Vologda; zoning of the Murmansk region under the terms of migration and accumulation of artificial radionuclides; environmental management in the Arctic and in the Baikal region; landscape and environmental planning and projecting cultural landscapes; spatio-temporal modeling of human-environment interfaces in urban areas; analysis of impact of modern nature management structure on the environment and human health; scientific bases of education for sustainable development.
Future research activities: theory and methodology of environmental management; geographic approaches to optimization of land use; geoecological investigations; landscape-ecological justification, environmental assessment, examination and audit; ecological, economic and socio-cultural optimization of environmental management; the development of criteria and indicators for the optimal structure of regional and local environmental management; GIS-technologies and remote sensing methods.

Participation in international projects on Arctic studies, environmental management in the Baikal region, heritage conservation, sustainable development and education for sustainable development. Students and teachers exchange with universities of Belorussia, China, Germany, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan. Systematic participation in activities of UN European Economic Commission, UNESCO, International National Trusts Organization, European Business Congress. Direct contacts with state bodies and NGO in the field of environmental management and heritage conservation in Delhi, Stockholm, Tokyo, etc. A three-year (2013-2015) international Swiss-Russian expedition project «Leman-Baikal Trans-Eurasian flight».
