World Data Center for Geography

World Data Center for Geography was established in 2011 in the framework of the interdisciplinary structure – world data systems – to ensure gathering, processing and conversion of data and to solve fundamental and applied problems in the sphere of geographical sciences. World Data Systems functions under the sponsorship of the International Council for Science – ICSU since 1956 (until 2008 in the form of two structures - World Data Centers and the Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical Data Analysis Services).
Regular Member of WDS - November 2012
Center director – Professor Tikunov V. S., Doctor of Geography.

Fields of Research

- Obtain, store, process, analyze and provide access to scientific spatial data for the realization of research, education and administration; -
- Information and reference support for archives and databases; creation and actualization of inventory catalogs, formation of metadata in the sphere of geography;
- Design new methods of spatial analysis and modeling, and multimedia mapping, etc.;
- Develop complex indicators and scenarios of territories’ sustainable development;
- Design atlas information systems of natural resources and ecological, socio-demographic and economic contents (global, national and regional levels);
- Develop distance education models;
- Adapt international courses for Russian circumstances; carry out scholastic seminars and conferences with a wide attraction of foreign scientists, etc.

Available cartographic data

Prospective research:

- Informational support of geographical research;
- Organize the processes of obtaining, storing and transmitting data to MSD centers (unification of formats and transmission protocols of data, organization of quality control of scientific data and information; creation of processing services) on the basis of modern information technology;
- Provide convenient access to data for users (creation and support of thematic web-portals, etc.);
- Organize integrated information space for the Regional MSD center and connect the partners of World Data Systems in the field of geographic science.
