MSU Graphics & Media Lab (Video Group)
The filter is intended for increasing the colour depth of video (bits per pixel) while preserving details and borders.
This filter utilizes multi-frame motion compensation and adaptive noise removal methods to increase color depth of video and preserve details. The main deficiency of this method is slow processing speed. But it can be jointly used with MSU Super-Resolution filter. In this case temporary results of the latter filter will be used by the former, and they will work together only slightly slower than any of them taken separately.
Filter was applied to colour depth increasing from 5 to 8 bits per channel. More examples can be found on the filter's page (see References below).
The first example is from the "amelie" sequence. Please look at the ground and car's windshield to see the difference:
Source frame (5 bits per channel)
Processed with MSU Super-Precision filter (8 bits per channel)
Histogram of source frame | Histogram of processed frame |
The second example is from the "toy" sequence. Please look at the stripes in the frame center to see the difference:
Source frame (5 bits per channel)
Processed with MSU Super-Precision filter (8 bits per channel)
