Summary
One of the most important recent findings of the anthropometric history research program is that human beings were becoming shorter at the onset of modern economic growth. There were hidden stresses on the biological system created by the new socio-economic environment that were not fully compensated by increases in income. This essay gives the outlines of an explanation for this "early-industrial-growth puzzle".
