Egor Frantsevich Cancrin and the Problem of Serfs in Russia,
in: Ekonomicheskaja istorija. Ezhegodnik (Economic Hystory. Yearbook). 2002, Moscow: ROSSPEN, 2003, p.455-481.

Summary
Egor Cancrin (1774-1845) - the Russian Minister of the Finance (1823-1844) - played a key role in the development and realization of the economic policy of Russia, especially currency reform in 1839-1843. The author studies the Cancrin attitude to serfdom. The three versions of his abolition project (1818, 1826, 1836) are reviewed in the article. Cancrin emphatically disputed against the landless redemption of the peasants. His projects restricted and specified economic obligations of peasants, defended their ownership against an infringement of landlords. CanЯrin offered a gradual buy-out of peasant holdings and a hereditary lease of peasants' lands.
