The origin of Surface Nonlinear Optics in Russia traces back to 1980 when Prof. Leonid Keldysh (who headed Quantum Radiophysics Division of Physics Department of Moscow State University) proposed to organize a research group for experimental studies in this, then newborn, field of Optics. The foundation of Laboratory of Nonlinear Optics of Surfaces and Nanostructures, succeeded by intensive research activities, shortly resulted in observing several new effects. In 1983 these results were published in a bunch of papers.

Observation of second-harmonic generation (SHG) from Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer, dc-electric-field-induced second harmonic (EFISH) and photo-activation effects in surface-enhanced SHG began the Surface Chapter in Nonlinear Optics at Moscow State University. The aforementioned observations served as a ground for further findings, such as Casimir nonlocality, magnetization-induced second- and even third-harmonic generation, and many others. These Russian tracks in Surface Nonlinear Optics can be seen in Selected Publications Section of this Presentation.
