Russian TeX Disk

Versions for DOS/Windows and Windows

First of all, sorry for broken english. English is not my native tongue.

Please, use "Save link as" (right mouse button) for downloading files, otherwise binary files will be corrupted.

What is russian TeX disk

It is a collection of TeX versions and TeX tools for DOS/Windows and Windows only. The size of this collection is adjusted for single CD. Some TeX versions and tools are installed/russified and can be started directly from CD; other are only distributives plus additional files for their russification. Installed TeX versions and even some distributives have rather complicated directory structure, so I archived them (WinZip). Corresponding zip-files are at the end of this page.

Some notes about russification. Well, I think, that Spain or France TeX and Russian TeX are quite different things. In russian we have completely ortohonal additional character set and frequently meet mixed russian-english texts. So I think, that we have new mixed russian-english character set (depending on basic russian encoding of your PC) and new russian-english language. So all font files (mf-sources, pk-fonts for drivers and pfb-fonts for PostScript) and the hyphenation file must be broken and mixed. I don't think, that "language" command and reencoding files is a good idea for Russian. Probably, I'm wrong.

Disk description

Here is the brief description of disk contents, based on the CD readme file:

RUSTEX

Directory rustex.dst: RusTeX distributive --- russian EmTeX (DOS/Windows TeX realizations) with some additions. It is my favourite TeX installation for PC.

Directory rustex: Installed rustex, that can be started directly from this disk. To start TEX menu for your (LA)TEX file myfile.tex just enter command
      d:\rustex\twb myfile
at the DOS prompt (I assume, that drive 'D:' is your CDROM drive and your tex file is current directory and you can write to current directory). The only problem is that you will not be able to generate new nonstandard fonts (you can't write them to CD).

Directory emtex.dst: original emtex distributive --- TeX realization for DOS/Windows.

MIKTEX

Directory miktex.dst: MikTeX distributive --- TeX realization for Windows.

Directory miktex.add: files for miktex russification, russification procedure described in file miktex.add/readme.

FPTEX

Directory fptex.dst: fpTeX distributive --- TeX realization for Windows.

Directory fptex.add: files for fptex russification, russification procedure described in file fptex.add/readme.

Directory fptex: Installed fptex, that can be started directly from this disk after some preparations. It is not fully functional (for example, it can't generate new fonts and add them to CD). To start fptex from disk you must:

1. Insert the following lines into autoexec.bat:
      set texmfcnf=d:\fptex\texmf-var\web2c
and add
      d:\fptex\bin\win32
to the PATH
(I assume, that drive 'D:' is your CDROM drive) and then reboot computer.
2. Then you can work from command line (tex, latex, windvi, dvips, dvipdfm, pdftex, pdflatex ...) or start WinEdt (from directory WinEdt, see later).
Keep in mind, that some commands will not work properly.

Important note:
It is assumed, that drive letter of CDROM is
      d: or e: or f: or g: or h:
If drive letter is (for example) k:
you must copy file fptex\texmf-var\web2c\texmf.cnf
to disk c: (for example to c:\tmp)
set corresponding value of TEXMFCNF
      (texmfcnf=c:\tmp)
and replace h:/ by k:/ in this file
(at lines: 54, 56, 64, 335 replace h:/fptex... by k:/fptex... )

WINEDT

Directory winedt.dst: WinEdt distributives (3 versions: winedt16, winedt32, winedt5). Windows editor for (La)TeX processing. It is assumed, that you have GSview 2.7/GhostScript 5.50 and Acrobat 4.05 (see later) already installed on your hard disk. Otherwise WinEdt will not be fully functional, and some buttons will be inactive.

Directory winedt: installed WinEdt5, adapted for fptex (it will work with miktex too). Can be started directly from CD.

Important notes:
1. WinEdt try to save config files to CDROM, and issue warning messages ("can't save..."). Just say "Ignore".
2. You can meet version of Windows, where the default font of WinEdt (Courier) have no russian letters. Just set (Options -> Preferences -> Font) other font with russian letters.
3. WinEdt is Try & Buy, so, please remember the date of first start of WinEdt on your computer. If WinEdt issue boring messages, just reset the date. It is also possible to clear registration data from Windows system files, but you must understand what you are doing.

ADDITIONS

Directory russian.add: Generic files (mf-sources, pfb-fonts and hyphen file) for russification of any-TeX-realizations in:
alternative encoding (directory ALT)
Windows encoding (directory WIN)
koi-8 encoding (directory KOI)

Keep in mind, that:
1. File latex.ltx contain foolish error message about "Too old source file". Some TeX systems (miktex, for example) will not generate latex.fmt file because of this intentionally inserted error. Remove corresponding lines from latex.ltx manually.
2. If you replace original hyphen.tex (english) by hyphen.tex (english-russian) from this disk, it will work nice for plain tex, and latex209, and sometimes even for latex2e. But in some latex2e versions patch to latex destroy russian hyphenations. In this case remove manually reference to hyphen (it is before reference to patch) in file latex.ltx and insert manually
      \input hyphen.tex
somewhere after reference to patch. (See for example files latex.ltx in directories miktex.add and fptex.add).

Directory acrobat.dst: Acrobat 4.05 distributive. Acrobat is a programm for processing .pdf files.

Directory gsview.dst: gsview2.7 / GhostScript5.50 distributive, and also GhostScript5.03 for DOS. Gsview/GhostScript are programms for processing .ps (PostScript) files.

Directory tools: some useful tools (archivers, convertors, etc).
