Dear Colleagues, The next meeting of Computer Algebra seminar will take place on Wednesday, September 17, at 17:00 in Moscow University (Room will be announced later). AGENDA: M. Matin far (Islamic Republic Iran). Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics, Moscow State University "ON THE COMPUTER-ALGEBRA IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LEAST SQUARES METHOD" ABSTRACT Let $Ax = b$ be a system of linear equations with a singular or a rectangular matrix $A.$ The topic of this talk is solving such a system in the least squares sense, that is, in such a way as to minimize the Euclidean length of the residual $b - Ax.$ The conventional approach to this problem, employed in packages of computational linear algebra, is to use various orthogonal decompositions of $A$, for instance, the singular value decomposition. For a number of variants of the linear least squares problem, the solution is a rational function of the input data of the problem. If the coefficients in the matrix $A$ and the vector $b$ are exact rational numbers, then one can calculate the exact solution, using error-free rational arithmetic. Our purpose is precisely this exact calculation. Orthogonal methods mentioned above are useless for this purpose, because they use quadratic radicals and/or iterative procedures. In the talk, we discuss the following variants of the least squares problem: 1. Unconditional least squares problem (LSP). 2. Solving a series of LSPs such that the matrices in any two consecutive problems are small-rank modifications of each other. 3. Least squares problem with linear equality constraints. 4. Least squares problem with linear inequality constraints. 5. Least squares problem with linear constraints of both types (3 and 4). 6. Solving a series of problems of type 3 or 4 such that the matrices in any two consecutive problems are small-rank modifications of each other. We also discuss certain applications of the least squares problem, for instance, the Drazin inversion of a singular matrix. М. Best regards, Victor Edneral
