Subject: Towards a European wide federated virtualised infrastructure
To: "Representatives of FP7 technology projects within the EGI
ecosystem." <dci-projects at mailman.egi.eu>

Dear Colleagues,

Apologies for multiple postings... but do feel free to redistribute
this call for interest.

Over the last decade through the EDG, EGEE and the EGI-InSPIRE
projects Europe has build a federated production infrastructure build
on exposing specific compute, data and other resources for supporting
international research collaborations. These user communities are now
seeing the flexibility offered through virtualisation technology for
infrastructure, platform and software (as a Service) and are
frequently asking for similar capabilities to be offered through EGI.

Within Europe there are a large number of activities (projects &
meetings) addressing the potential of virtualisation technology and
its deliver as clouds. The adoption and migration to virtualisation
technology within EGI will be the main theme of the EGI Technical
Forum in Lyon September 19-23rd 2011.

To build on the discussions taking place at CloudScape III
(http://www.sienainitiative.eu/StaticPage/Cloudscape.aspx), at the EGI
User Forum (http://uf2011.egi.eu) and other meetings I would like to
hold a dedicated workshop to start planning out EGI's response to
these new technologies and the way we wish to deliver them to meet the
needs of the diverse user communities we wish to support.

A draft workshop CFP has been created http://go.egi.eu/jngxd along
with a Doodle to use to measure favourable dates across the community.
Please provide your feedback as to the scope, goals and duration of
the workshop as recorded on the wiki page. Using your EGI SSO account
you should be able to login and edit this page directly if you so
wish.

The date of the meeting and its location (probably Amsterdam) will be
confirmed the week of the 7th March 2011. Please contact me directly
if you have any specific concerns.

Regards,

Steven
