Conference
site and technical details
Conference site in Arkhangelsk is the Institute of Ecological Problems of the North, Ural Branch of the
Russian Academy of Sciences.
The official languages of the conference are English
and Russian (with translation).
In the lecture halls there will be overhead projectors
and computer-aided data projection.
Posters are highly welcome and will be displayed close
to the lecture halls. Poster sessions during which authors have to stay with
their posters will be organised. There will be a possibility for short oral
presentations at the poster sessions.
Submission of abstracts is required for all posters
and oral presentations. Instructions for preparation of abstracts are given
below in this circular. Abstracts will be published and distributed at the
conference.
Selected papers from the conference suggested by the
scientific committee may be published in a special issue of the international
periodical 'EURASIAN SOIL SCIENCE'.
General information
Climate
The weather in Arkhangelsk in August is unpredictable.
It can be warm, hot or cool and rainy with daytime temperatures ranging from 10
to 30 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is wise to bring both summer clothing and
warm clothing and a raincoat.
Accompanying persons
Accompanying persons are welcome to attend the
ceremonies of the conference, social events and sightseeing tours that are
possible to organize via Arkhangelsk tour bureaus.
Transportation
Arkhangelsk has an international airport but it has
only few international flights per week to several Scandinavian cities. So, the
main international gate for Arkhangelsk is Moscow. There are two ways from
Moscow to Arkhangelsk - air and railway. There are 2 or 3 flights per day from
Moscow to Arkhangelsk (duration is 1.5
hours, the price for return ticket is ~ 250?). There are also 2 or 3 daily trains (duration is ~20
hours, the price for return ticket is ~ 90?). The Organizing committee will arrange the transfer of
all the foreign participants from the International airport to the domestic one
(or Railway station) in Moscow. The organizers will take care on the transfer of all participants from airport and
Railway station to hotels in Arkhangelsk. The Organizing Committee also plans
to reserve and buy air tickets Moscow-Arkhangelsk-Moscow beforehand as it could
be a problem to get it just before flight in the summer time and it will be
cheaper for a group of people (see section 'Payment' below). For railway
travel, please, take into account that a summer is a peak vacation time for the
northern people and buy tickets also beforehand. Organizing Committee is ready
to help; please, contact us on your travel as soon as possible.
Accommodation
There are several hotels in Arkhangelsk but only two
of them are of the international standards. The Organizing committee recommend
making reservations in the Purnavolok Hotel (www.purnavolok.ru) for comfort,
reasonable prices (~50? per day) and
convenient location. The reservations can be made by the participants on a
private basis or by the Organizing committees according to participants
request. There are also several cheaper hotels with limited facilities and
quality. Please, ask the Organizing committee for the information you need.
CONFERENCE FEES:
Participation in a 3-day meeting in Arkhangelsk - 180? (until 15.04.05) or 200? (later).
Participation in the 3-days field trip to Pinega - 180? (until 15.04.05) or 200? (later).
Fee covers the
following:
conference materials; coffee, transfers from airports etc.; full service during
field trips, including accommodation and meals in Pinega region.
Students do not pay
the conference fee and in the field excursion to Pinega have a discount up to 75% (in case of
limited accommodation facilities).
The conference fee for soil scientists from countries
having special treatments
with Dokuchaev Soil Science Society (e.g. Poland) is 90 ?.
The conference fee for Russian soil scientists will be
announced later depending on the financial support of the Russian Foundation
for Basic Research.
Organizing committee strongly recommends to transfer
together with conference and field trip fees 250? for buying return tickets
Moscow-Arkhangelsk-Moscow (otherwise, nobody can guarantee smooth traveling).

All fees for foreign participants are in EUROs and all
payments (the whole basic package including field trip and air tickets is
180+180+250=610?) should be made before April, 15, 2005, to:

How to write the abstract
The text must be in English and should not exceed one page including figures
and references with 2.5 cm margins. The text should be prepared in Microsoft
Word printed 12 pt Times New Roman single-spaced.
The title block should include title, name(s) of
author(s), affiliation(s) and present e-mail address, if appropriate, or
mailing address.
Title: Use Times New Roman 14 pt, bold,
centered.
Author(s): Use Times New Roman 12 pt, italics,
centered
Affiliation and E-mail address: Use Times New Roman 10 pt, italics centered
Main text: Times
New Roman, 12 pt.
Only metric units should be used and these should be
abbreviated (cm, km etc.). Isotope
numbers should be in smaller point, preceding the letter but following the
symbol (e.g.δ34S0/00).
Figures: line drawings only, halftone or colour
photographs will not be accepted.
Please check for legibility of the figures! Reduce the
figures to the size in which they are to be printed in the abstract. Please
make certain that your illustrations contain a bar scale and a north arrow
where appropriate. Within the text, refer to figures as follows: Fig.1; Fig. 2.
How and when to submit the abstract
Deadline for receipt of abstracts is April 15, 2005.
Abstracts should be sent to the Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of
Science. The abstract text should be sent in digital form by e-mail for pedology@igras.geonet.ru AND sergey.gor@mail.ru.
Line drawings
may also be submitted as computer files (only as .JPG and .GIF files). The
organizers will reformat the abstract text and insert the figures.
