GENERAL INFO Conference aim is linking together different kinds of specialists interested in geomorphic and palaeoenvironmental aspects of archaeological studies, risk assessment and protection of archaeological sites and archaeological materials against environmental damaging processes of different nature (geomorphological, hydrological, pedological), and putting archaeological heritage into public domain. Preservation of geoarchaeological monuments, geotourism and archaeotourism DRAFT SCHEDULE August 27, 2012: Option 1: Arrival to Moscow, guided excursion to the State Historical Museum, night train to Smolensk. Option 2: direct arrival to Smolensk this or next day. August 28, 2012: Hotel check-in, conference registration, two morning and one afternoon sessions, afternoon bus excursion over Smolensk, conference dinner. August 29, 2012: two morning and two afternoon sessions. August 30, 2012: Morning: field trip to Gnezdovo archaeological site ­ the Viking Age scandinavian/slavish settlement in the Dnieper River terrace-, a river port on the Early Medieval trade route "from the Varyangians to the Greeks" active in AD IX-XI centuries. Discussing geomorphological, sedimentological, palynological and pedological evidences of the Dnieper River Holocene palaeohydrology and its influence on human occupation of floodplain areas. Afternoon: Bus excursion to the Katyn memorial complex dedicated to Polish officers massacre (1940) and victims of the Soviet Great Purges of the 1930's. August 31, 2012: Option 1: Remote field trip (2-2.5 hrs one way) to the Serteyka River archaeological site (Western Dvina River basin) including archaeological monuments from 9th millennium B.C. to A.D. 1st millennium. Visiting Neolithic sites, pileworks of the Bronze Age, Iron Age settlements, discussing their geomorphic position and environmental history, economical strategies. Overview of geological history of lake depressions in the valley bottom and the Holocene lake history. Demonstrating results of underwater archaeological investigations of Neolithic sites. Option 2: Bus excursions over cultural places in the Smolensk city and suburbs: Talashkino historical and art preserve, a notable artistic center in 1890th-1910th (the artists N.Roerich, M.Vrubel', A.Benois, M.Nesterov, KKorovin, I.Repin; the sculptor P.Trubetskoi; the composers A.Andreev and I.Stravinsky); museum of the sculptor S.Konenkov. 22.00-23.00: Departure from Smolensk to Moscow by night train. CONFERENCE COSTS Registration fee is planned at about 200 (students 100), which covers abstract book , 4 lunches (August 28-31), coffee breaks, field trips, bus transfer in Smolensk.
