Department of Lithology and Marine Geology unites two laboratories: Laboratory of Lithology and Facial Analysis and Laboratory of Marine Geology, there is a branch in Geological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences.

The training of the students is carried out on educational direction 011100 "Geology", the department lets out the bachelors and diplomaed experts in specializations 011104 "Lithology" and 011105 "Marine Geology".
Best of the graduates have an opportunity to be trained in Master course on Master programs 511002 "Lithology" and 511003 "Geology of seas and oceans", and also in post-graduate course on a speciality "Lithology".

The department annually provides training 40-50 own students, and also lithological training of the students of other 11 departments of the faculty and 2 departments of Faculty of Geography. The employees of the department read fundamental courses with laboratory studies: "Lithology" (complete - 160 hours - and brief - 72, 60, 48 hours) for the students of the faculty and "Bases of lithology and facies" (96 hours) for the students of 2 departments of Faculty of Geography. The students of the department, besides, learn 25 special courses, among which "Lithogenetic Analysis" (prof. O.V.Yapaskurt), "Facies and Paleogeography", "Sedimentary Geoformations" (prof. P.P.Timofeev), "Introduction to Oceanology" and "Geology of Oceans and Seas" (prof. P.N.Kuprin). Unique disciplines introduced, such as "Geochemistry of Sedimentary Processes" (prof. V.N.Kholodov), "Evolution of Sedimentary Rocks" (prof. V.T.Frolov), "Hydrothermal-sedimentary ores of the World Ocean" (Dr. of Sci. G.Yu.Butuzova) etc.
Specialized practices are organized: lithological - in Crimea (at the MSU educational base), Taman, Voronezh region and practice on marine geology - in Baltic.

The scientific activity of the department as a whole corresponds to a priority scientific direction of the faculty "Composition, structure, geodynamics and evolution of the lithosphere".
The basic direction of scientific researches - "Sedimentary basins; continental and marine sedimentary processes and their evolution". The financing of works is carried out by the grants from Russian Fund of Fundamental Researches, Ministry of Education of Russian Federation and contracts with the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russian Federation. The department does not disregard applied tasks within the framework of a developed scientific direction, which decision serves an additional source of financing.
 

The department offers cooperation with the interested industrial and scientific organizations, searches for the sponsors for field and laboratory lithological researches.
