Division of Geochemistry.
In geochemistry the main speciality at the University is "Geochemistry, mineralogy and petrology". It
is subdivided into five specializations.
In "Crystallography" students take the courses in crystal growth and X-ray phase analysis
of substance. Students here study deeply physical chemistry and geology as well as modern methods of crystallographical
and mineralogical investigations.
In specialization of "Mineralogy" mineralogists of broad specialization, specialists in
theoretical, experimental and applied mineralogy are trained. Students get strong background in general geology,
physics, chemistry and physical chemistry. They also know how to use traditional and state-of-the-art methods
of mineral morphology studies, their crystalline structure, internal structure, chemical composition, physical
properties and thermodynamic characteristics.
In "Petrography" there are the following specializations: geologist-petrographer, having a command of
methods of rock studies and their metallogenic evaluation, experimental petrographer, knowing methods of physico-chemical
analysis of mineral paragenesis and experimental modeling of natural processes under high temperatures and pressures;
petrographer-petrophysicist is able to apply methods of investigation of rock physical properties to obtain data
on their formation and to interpret the results of the exploration.
Students specializing in "Geochemistry" know modern methods of geochemical investigation
both in the field and in the laboratory. They can organize the search for mineral deposits on the geochemical
basis using state-of-the-art methods of data analysis and interpretation. Geochemists know methods of experimental
geochemistry, of determining absolute ages of rocks, to solve different geological tasks including the search
for mineral resources.
In the specialization "Geochemical methods of prospecting" specialists are trained in
the field of theory and practice of geochemical search for mineral resources deposits; students are taught how
to conduct regional search and detailed geochemical survey using different methods and on different landscapes;
they know modern methods of metallogenic analysis of geochemical data, methods of study the primary zonality of
deposits, of forecast of deep mineralization and of assessment of metal resources using computers. Training of
students in this specialization includes courses in state-of-the-art methods of emission spectral, atomic absorption
and X-ray radiometric express analysis of rocks and on mathematical interpretation of geochemical data.
Students of this specialization have their practical work during the years of study and on-the-job training and
training before getting the diploma in the main ore regions of the country. The graduates of this specialization
go into scientific research and geological enterprises and into higher educational institutions.
