The history of studying languages and Oriental cultures in Moscow State University (MSU) started in the fifties of the 18th century. Established in 1956 on the basis of several departments of Historical and Philological faculties of Moscow State University, the Institute of Asian and African Studies (IAAS) was based on a more than two hundred years of studying Oriental countries tradition. IAAS is the central higher educational establishment of Oriental studies in Russia, where professional training techniques of rare Oriental languages, such as - Vietnamese, Khmer, Burmese, Tamil, Dari, Thai, Philippine, Mongolian, Swahili, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Turkish and others are carefully preserved.
Students can study at one of the three departments: historical, philological and socio-economic (the latter includes two majors: ?Economy? and ?Political science?.
Education is completed within a 4-year studying programme with the issuance of the Bachelor`s Degree Diploma in ?Oriental Studies, African Studies?.
Our university also gives an opportunity of completing a 2-year studying programme for a Master?s Degree.
Regardless of their major, our students master in the same capacity one or two Oriental languages and one of the West-European languages (English, French, Spanish or German).

Tuition fees for BSc Degree and MSc Degree students ? 330 000 rubles per year.

Students study Oriental languages and the eastern profile discipline. The program includes studing of Russian and Western European languages. After graduation, students can work with languages (translator) and in core professional areas (economist, scholar, historian, political scientist).
The IAAS includes 3 departments: Historical, Philological and Socio-economic. Prospective students select the department and oriental language from the list provided. The IAAS annually admits students for the following language programs: Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Arabic. Also study programs of Indonesian, Hindi, Vietnamese, Swahili and other languages are proposed from year to year.
During education foreign citizens continue studies of Russian and Western European languages. Bachelor's degree program takes four years.

Entrance exams for Bachelor?s Degree at IAAS: Russian language (written), History (written).
Tuition fees (in 2016): 330 000 rubles (per year). Payments can be made every semester or for one year.

The IAAS MSU has several master degree programs (course "Asian and African Studies"):
A diploma of completed higher education is necessary for admission to the Master?s degree programs. Admission is conducted on a competitive basis according to the results of entrance examinations. Also before starting MA program a specialty examination "Country in the Asian-African region" have to be taken.
Acception of documents (deadlines):љ from June 2 untilљ July 1.
Entrance examinations for MA programs: July 2-4.
Tuition fees (in 2016): 330000 rubles per year, (MA program takes 2 years).
During studying at the MA degree program foreign students continue to study Russian and Western European languages.

In IAAS MSU, there are several postgraduate programs (PhD programs): Individuals with a diploma of completed higher education (bachelor and master degree) may apply for the postgraduate programs. Enrollment to the postgraduate programs occurs on a competitive basis by results of the entrance examinations. Conditions of admission: knowledge of the Russian language (a certificate in Russian or a bachelor's degree diploma from university where education was held in Russian).
Acception of documents (deadlines): from August 20 to September 5.
Entrance examinations for PhD programs: from September 5 to September 20.
Examinations for admission to postgraduate programs: Specialty, Western European language, Philosophy.
The cost of training in internal postgraduate study program (in 2016): 330000 rubles per year, the program takes 3 years.
The cost of studying at extramural postgraduate course: 220000 rubles per year, course takes 4 years.
During studying at the postgraduate degree programs foreign students continue to study Russian and Western European languages.

You may choose the topic of your postgraduate and projects among the great number of Institute staff research interests, i.e. History, theory and typology of Oriental and African languages, theory of translation as well as typology of Oriental literatures regional interrelationship. The other line of current research work includes new conceptual approaches to Oriental history periodization as well as economical history, historical demography, ethno genesis, peculiarities of local cultures and traditions, religion and philosophical systems.
