Born: February 9, 1948, St. Petersbourg.

Graduated from Medical Institute in Nizhny Novgorod(1972); clinical residency, Myasnikov Research Institute of Clinical Cardiology of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1972); Candidate of Medical Sciences (1974); Doctor of Medical Sciences (1982); Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1993); Full Member of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1999); Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences (2000).

Director of Myasnikov Research Institute of Clinical Cardiology, Russian Cardiology Scientific and Clinical Complex (1991-2008); Head of Federal Agency for Health and Social Development (2006-2008).

Yuri N. Belenkov is Founder and President of the Russian Association for Heart Failure Research, a member of the Presidium of the Russian Association of Cardiologists and the CIS Association of Cardiologists. In the USSR he was the first to introduce echocardiography in 1973 and cardiovascular MRI in 1983. Having long worked in the field of space cardiology, he has contributed to the development of ultrasonic medical equipment in Russia, some of the devices being used in space.

He has published over 600 works, among them a number of fundamental works on heart failure, cardiomyopathy, primary pulmonary hypertension; his 18 monographs have been published both in Russia and abroad. He has been scientific adviser to 64 Candidates and Doctors of Medical Sciences.

Yuri N. Belenkov is Editor-in Chief of Russian Journal of Cardiac Failure, Journal of Cardiology, and Russian Heart Journal. His awards include USSR Lenin Komsomol Prize (1978), USSR State Awards (1980, 1989), RF Government Prize (2003), the Order of Friendship, the Order of Honor, The third degree Order for Service to the Fatherland.
