The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology was established in 1995 and within a relatively short period of its existence, has become the All-Russia Center for Research in byzantine and modern greek studies having a very high reputation worldwide. Students, who study in the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology receive a double specialty - philologist-byzantinologist and neoellinist. The lesson's plan is divided into three parts: it includes items related to vizantinists, neoellinistiks (modern Greek language and literature), as well as classes in ancient Greek language, ancient literature, history and culture of antiquity, the history of language. A special place within the educational and research activity of the department is Greek ethnolinguistics, virtually unknown in Greece. In the Department since 1998 is held the world's only annual scientific conference of young specialists in vizantinistiks and neoellinistiks, as well as conference on ethnolinguistics, successfully defended thesis. The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology has a unique research library, which includes monographs, critical editions of monuments of literature, and valuable scientific periodicals, reference books, art albums, as well as contemporary Greek fiction. Publishing Program of the Department has two directions: the publication of scientific journals and translations. The Department publishes two scientific journals and several monographs, which publishes the work of students, young scientists, and is the creator of the series "Greek Library", which has the goal of publishing the best and most significant works of modern Greek literature in highly artistic translations and with scientific comments of the best scientists-neoellinists.
