Guide for Student Advisers

Greetings from your colleagues at Lappeenranta University of Technology!
Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) is an international scientific community with around 7 000 students and faculty. Since its foundation in 1969, LUT has successfully combined two complementary fields technology and business. LUT Summer School offers an ideal way to become acquainted with the wide range of academic opportunities at our university. With the wide-ranging selection of courses on-offer during the LUT Summer School we aim to both challenge and inspire students. This guide for Student Advisers provides our partners with additional information so that they may answer questions from prospective participants in the LUT Summer School. If further information is required, you are welcome to contact us at summerschool@lut.fi.
Meet our summer school staff members at www.lut.fi/summerschool > LUT Summer School faculty.

About Finland
Finland is a safe and stable Nordic country with a well-developed infrastructure, highly ranked education system, efficient and modern health care services and a vibrant cultural life. Finland is ranked as one of the world's most competitive countries in numerous international surveys. Finnish companies value innovation highly; and Finland is the home of many world leading companies in areas such as the forest products industry (UPM, Stora Enso and Metso), transportation services (KONE), design (Iittala and Marimekko) and the entertainment industry (Rovio, with its worldwide success, Angry Birds).

Lappeenranta and LUT
Lappeenranta is located some 220 km northeast of Finland's capital, and about 230 km northwest of St. Petersburg, Russia. Lappeenranta is the centre of a major industrial region; at the same time the city itself and the surrounding countryside comprise a clean and beautiful mosaic of green forests and blue lakes. LUT is located on the shore of Lake Saimaa, approximately seven kilometers from the city centre. LUT is a dynamic, rapidly developing international research university with a friendly studying environment thanks to its small size and modern facilities. Our local and international students find Lappeenranta an excellent place to study small enough to feel at home and large enough to stimulate.

Inside view of Russia
We offer the opportunity to broaden students' cultural experience by arranging a trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, only about one-and-a-half hours from Lappeenranta. The city is considered as historically and culturally unique, yet also the most western city in Russia. Many international tourists visit St. Petersburg, and it is a very interesting and safe tourist destination.

Visas
Students must possess a valid passport and a visa issued by a Russian embassy or consulate to be able to enter Russia. The LUT Summer School will send an official invitation document for visa application purposes to students who enroll for the trip to St. Petersburg. This invitation document enables students to apply for the visa in the Russian embassy or consulate.

Schedule
There are two options to take part in the extracurricular visit to St. Petersburg: 25 28 July. The first option is to take this trip as a complementary part of the "Doing Business in Russia" course (International Business module). Note! It is possible to take the International Business module with or without the trip to St. Petersburg. However, the trip is compulsory for students taking the "Doing Business in Russia" course, if they wish to receive credits for the course. 26 28 July. A weekend trip with organized cultural and social program for students who enroll separately for the weekend trip to St. Petersburg.
