Job description

PhD Position in Theoretical Chemistry

Project title: Relativistic effects on molecular properties using quantum chemical schemes including a high-level treatment of electron correlation The research project focuses on the development of efficient quasi-relativistic quantum-chemical algorithms for the calculation of molecular response properties with the use of both ab initio wave function theory and density functional theory methods. Of particular interest is the description of the properties which depend essentially on the response of atomic core electrons, such as the hyperfine structure constants, indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants, dipole and quadrupole shielding factors, nuclear shielding tensors, etc. The development of basis sets designed for quasi-relativistic calculations is part of the project along with the development of computer codes. Applications of the techniques developed to systems of practical interest will be carried out in collaboration with experimental chemists. The project will benefit from a close cooperation with several theoretical groups located in the European Union and in the United States.

Requirements

The position is open for a foreign or Dutch student with:

  • an MSc degree (or equivalent) in chemistry or physics
  • knowledge of programming languages (F77/90 and/or C/C++ are preferred)
  • experience in programming and using quantum chemical codes
  • ability to integrate in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • ambition to obtain a PhD degree within 4 years

Organisation

University of Groningen

Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RuG) is the biggest university in the northern Netherlands, which employs ca. 5,000 staff members and gives education to 20,000 students. She is considered to be one of top 5 universities in Europe for research in Materials Science, Chemistry, Space Science, Microbiology, and Environment/Ecology. The university is situated in a lively yet friendly, safe, and small-scale city in green environment and provides excellent facilities for sports and cultural activities.

MSCplus

The Theoretical Chemistry at the RuG is a part of the Materials Science Centre Plus (MSCplus) organisation, which joins together more that 300 researchers in various fields of materials science. In 1993, the MSCplus was accredited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) as a leading Research School in Materials Science. In 1999, and again in 2004, MSCplus was selected by the Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO) as a National Research Center. The RuG and MSCplus are equal opportunities employers. Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

Conditions of employment

Bursary Scholarship:

The duration of the scholarship is four years and amounts to ? 1390,- gross per month. Research PhD students only have to pay 3% taxes. For a scholarship no work permit is required. A PhD student on a scholarship is not allowed to teach or to have supplementary income in the Netherlands. If so, the total income - stipend plus other earnings - will be taxed according to the regular Dutch tax rate.

Application and Additional Information

Further information can be obtained from and letters of application can be sent to:
