American Literature Association Conference

The Research Society for American Periodicals is soliciting papers for our two panels at this year's American Literature Association Conference, to be held May 24-27, 2001, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The topics for the sessions are:

1) American Periodicals: International Connections  We seek papers about periodicals published in the U.S. written in languages other than English, or intended for immigrant or expatriate communities, and/or papers on American periodicals in English by scholars from outside the US who bring an international perspective to the work. The papers should be accessible to an audience likely to be more knowledgeable about English-language American writers and publishing. "Periodicals" may be
conceived broadly, including magazines, newspapers, gift annuals, amateur press periodicals, children's magazines, and zines. Feel free to query first.

2) Open Topic
The RSAP is looking for proposals on any topics appropriate to American periodicals.
Send one-page proposals for these sessions  (email proposals preferred) by December 15, 2000 to:

The Research Society for American Periodicals is a membership society devoted to scholarship on American magazines and newspapers. It runs an email discussion group, RSAP-L, and has a web site with resources helpful to scholars researching periodicals. You can join RSAP-L via the website. It also publishes the annual American Periodicals: A Journal of History, Criticism and Bibliography, and the RSAP Newsletter. visit the Research Society for American Periodicals website at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~ellengarvey/index1.html

You can (eventually) find more information about the ALA convention at http://humanities.byu.edu/ALA/

I also want to remind you of the RSAP-L discussion group, which is now heating up. People are introducing themselves and telling about their enticingly varied periodical research interests. It looks like we have quite a range of expertise on hand. I hope you'll join the group, if you haven't yet. You can join by sending a blank message to RSAP-L-subscribe@listbot.com or by filling in your name on the discussion group page of the website:
http://home.earthlink.net/~ellengarvey/discuss.html

If that doesn't work, write to me and I'll send you an invitation. Once you join, you can catch up on the introductions via the list archives.

Sincerely,
Ellen Gruber Garvey
