REGARDING THE SHOOTING OF SHOW LEOPARD IN MONGOLIA
|
A.N.Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of Russian Academy of Sciences (IEE RAS) is an extremely anxious by the information about the permission for four snow leopard shooting for the scientific and research purposes in Mongolia. Institute believes unacceptable the killing of these extremely rare animals, including the scientific purposes.
IEE RAS is the biggest zoological Institute in Russia. We conduct number of projects for study and conservation of rare and endanger species including snow leopard, Siberian tiger, polar bear and many other species. Conducting these projects we use at a maximum non-invasive approaches (without direct contact with the animal), including molecular-genetic, hormonal, veterinarian, parasitological and classical field methods.
IEE RAS has an agreement with Mongolian association “Biosphere and Ecology” about cooperation in scientific research on the main branches of zoology, reproductive biology and animal genetic. According to this agreement, it is supposed to conduct collaborative research on behavioral ecology of carnivores on adjustment territories of our countries; to provide scientific and technical background for construction and functioning of snow leopard breeding center in Mongolia; application and practical training of podometry method for the individual identification of large carnivores footprints (and first of all – snow leopard footprints). Our Institute has also a duty to conduct molecular-genetic, hormonal, parasitological, histological and morphological analyses of all remaining (including bones and soft tissues) and excretes (feces and urine samples) of carnivores collected in Mongolia.
Institute is ready to conduct the study of samples collected from the dead animals in the captivity or in the wild (including molecular genetic research of bones), however, our Institute strongly objects to the shooting of the animals (including snow leopards) for these research and does not suggest any scientific work with these materials.
