The opening of three information systems took place:

Information searching system on biodiversity of vertebrate animals of Russia

The information searching system (ISS) on biodiversity of vertebrates in Russia. The aim of the project which was supported by the federal special scientific and technical program of The Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology of Russian Federation (“Information systems on biodiversity”), and partly by Biological Science`s department of RAS (“Fundamental basics of biological resource management”), is to create public information system and integrated database (DB) on biodiversity of vertebrates in Russia in the framework of Internet. The integrated database of vertebrates in Russia includes 295 species and subspecies of freshwater fish, 29 - amphibians, 84 - reptiles, 730 - birds and 310 - mammals. The developed information system and DB of vertebrates contain all to date well-known species, the validity of which hasn't been reconsidered in the appropriate systematic revisions. For the description of each species general conceptual model of data presentation has been accepted.

Taxonomic status - with an indication of belonging to definite class, order and family. Genus - latin genus` name with an indication of the author and the description`s year as well as the russian name. Species - latin and scientific name with an indication of the author and the description`s year as well as the common russian name and synonyms.

Species' characteristic - the basic distinctive species` features and what is more for each species of animal an illustration or photo is given. Then the brief systematic part follows, in which the basic characteristic species` features are presented with the indication of main subspecies and ecological forms. Sometimes explanations about others standpoints on the structure of the present species and subspecies are given.

Distribution - the skeleton map and verbal description of species` spreading in the world, in Russia and contiguous territories. Natural habitat, lost habitat`s part and new habitat as the result of introduction are represented by various graphical symbols.

Maximum size, mass and ages - known maximum sizes, mass and age limit of animals are given.

Way of living - the basic facts on species` biology are briefly introdused: habitats, nutrition, development, maturing and reproduction.

Species` status - trade species` value and its inclusion to The Red Books of the Russian Federation and ICNP. Certain attention is focused on animal`s species which are included to “The Red Book of the Russian Federation” (additional information at the URL: http://www.sevin.ru/redbooksevin).

The developed information system functioning in three different modes: review, query and search, is presented at the server of the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution. The review mode is intended for navigation at the hierarchical tree in species` selection out of DB. But as a result of that, as the ISS is not only intended for the scientific community but also for the general public, three different navigation`s methods are provided in the system: on latin, russian and latin-russian species` names and taxons of the upper level of the species. The query mode allows selecting the species with the help of dynamic SQL - standard queries to DB. The search mode assures the functional mobility for full textual contextual seach in DB of vertebrates`s specific sketches of the Russian Federation. The developed information system will be of use in the compilation of regional summaries and cadastres as well as for the sectoral ministry`s employees and specialists of RAS, working under the problem of biodiversity and bioresources` conservation of the RF.

Information searching system on fauna and flora of nature reserves of Russian Federation

The aim of the project which was supported by the federal special scientific and technical program of The Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology of Russian Federation (“Information systems on biodiversity”), and partly by Biological Science’s department of RAS (“Fundamental basics of biological resource management”), is to create public information system and integrated database (DB) on fauna and flora with the purpose of introduction the species` structure of living organisms which are protected today at the reserved territories of Russia.

The pilot version of ISS is realized by the example of birds and vascular plants. The cadastral facts of Russia`s reserves are introduced in the context of conceptual information model which includes: the federal and departmental submission; the administrative status and federal district; the year of organization; the basic goals and tasks; the presence of status of biosphere’s reserve; the area and characteristics of the space distribution; the inclusion to the object`s register of Universal cultural and natural heritage; the skeleton map of reserves with gridding.

In ISS the DB of bird`s species was created on the basis of L.S. Stepanyan`s work (2003) by means of species` exlusion which inhabited outside Russia. The tables of DB include the attributes, indicating the taxonomic species` description, the characteristics of residence of settled, nested, flyway, migratories, wintering and included in The Red Book of the Russian Federation animals, literary sources. The founded DB gives an idea of current status of birds` conservation in Russia. According to our facts out of 730 birds` species which reside in the territories of Russia, 701 species are registered in reserves, i.e. 97%.

In ISS the DBs of vascular plants of Russia`s reserves are created with the characteristics of systematic species` locations, their presence in reserves and literary sources. The summary list of 7920 (5 sections and 193 families) reserves` species and subspecies forms about 67% of vascular flora`s plants of Russia. Only taxons were admitted in the DB, which grew for certain or at least were once registered in the proper reserves` territories, but not in their buffer zones or surroundings. As a basis of the DB, the published information was assumed, which had been earlier collected by us in the form of basic annotated bibliography on vascular plants and vertibrates in Russia`s reserves. For many reserves the annotated species` registers were used in series “The flora and fauna of reserves” which have been published (since 1987) by the RAS committee of reserved work (nowadays the section of Reserved work of the RAS committee on biodiversity`s conservation; the chairman of the committee is the academician of RAS D.S. Pavlov). Altogether more than 100 specialists from the reserves and from others scientific institutions took part in the operation.

The developed information system functioning on the basis of frame-based technology in three different modes: review, query and search, is presented at the server of the A.N. Severtzov Institute of Ecology and Evolution. The review mode is intended for navigation at the hierarchical tree in species` selection out of DB. After species` selection in the special frame, reserves` lists are reflected, in which the species was registered and then the gridding is indicated on the map of Russia. The search mode assures the functional mobility for full textual contextual seach in integrated DB of reserves. The developed information system will be of use in the compilation of cadastres as well as for the specialists of RAS, working under the problem of biodiversity and bioresources` conservation of the Russian Federation.
