Re: PhD position in ETH Turbulent Mixing of Two Gas Streams with High [re: pyron]
      17.04.2012 10:38

Ph.D. Thesis
Turbulent Mixing of Two Gas Streams with High Density Ratio
The Ph.D. Thesis addresses turbulent mixing in the presence of stable and unstable density
stratifications. Despite its technical relevance in the fields of safety of nuclear reactors,
chemical process engineering and the transport of liquefied gases, as well in the simulation of
fires, related literature is surprisingly scarce; there are only a few references outlining past
shear layer experiments at high density differences (He-N2), and no examples of isokinetic
experiments at high density differences were located. Past numerical simulations of the above
mentioned mixing scenarios have often deviated from experimental results. This failure is due
in part to the violation of the Boussinesq approximation of the first kind, i.e. the assumption
that the density variation generates only a small correction to the inertia term of the
momentum equation and can be thus neglected, only considering the density variation in
conjunction with the acceleration of gravity.
The PhD student is dedicated to the HOMER (HOrizontal Mixing Experiment in a
Rectangular channel) project to be conducted in the Laboratory for Thermal Hydraulics at the
Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. The aim of this project is to conduct experiments
studying the development of the mixing layer formed along the density interface between two
parallel co-flowing gas streams of differing densities. Shear and isokinetic mixing layers will
be studied at a variety of velocities, and diverse density differences will be examined. Optical
measurement techniques will be applied to measure the velocity fields with Particle Image
Velocimetry (PIV) and the concentration fields with Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF).
From a fundamental point of view, these mixing processes have nuclear safety relevance due
to their possible effects on gas stratification, hydrogen distribution and associate risk of
deflagration and detonation. Additionally, the study of non-Boussinesq effects is an important
issue for safety relevant processes such as the accidental release of hazardous gases in the
chemical industry, the storage and transport of liquefied gases or the simulation of fires.

(для физиологов и молбиологов)
A graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow position
in the project 'Temperature, eutrophication and contamination-dependent effects, their rhythmicity and interactions in Baltic Sea fish' are opened for application. The abstract of the project proposal is given below, so the chosen applicants are expected to contribute to it. Details of the project/full project plan can be obtained from the PI of the project (Mikko Nikinmaa, e-mail miknik@utu.fi, tel. 358-2-3335731 or 358-40-8361073).
'The present proposal investigates cellular regulation of environmental responses in Baltic Sea fish. The work concentrates on the major environmental questions in the Baltic, temperature change, eutrophication and associated reduction of oxygen level, and pollution. The focus is on transcriptional regulation of gene function by hypoxia-inducible factor HIF), and interaction of this transcription factor with other transcription factors of the same protein family (bHLH-PAS proteins) which include factors regulating gene function in response to organic pollutants and those regulating biological rhythms. As we have recently observed that HIF is involved in direct regulation of temperature responses in a fish species, crucian carp, in addition to its indirect effects on temperature acclimation via affecting responses to reduced oxygen levels, and that cyprinid fish, such as crucian carp, have two different paralogs of hypoxia-inducible factors, one of which appears to be transcriptionally regulated during development while the other is transcriptionally regulated by hypoxia in adult animals, we study, if the two different paralogs play different roles in temperature acclimation. We also study, if the responses to hypoxia are affected by activation of xenobiotically regulated gene transcription pathway, which is markedly induced in Baltic Sea fish. Also, HIFs are affected by reactive oxygen species, the level of which is influenced by many contaminants, including organic compounds and metals. Their level is also affected by UV-radiation. In our studies we investigate, how HIF is regulated by reactive oxygen species. Because the different transcriptional regulators belong to the same protein family and the few experiments that have investigated their interactions in laboratory rodents have shown that activation of xenobiotically induced pathway affects biological rhythms, we investigate from ecological context, if rhythms or rhythmic hypoxia responses are affected by environmental contamination. Owing to the long north-to-south gradient of the Baltic Sea both temperature, radiation and rhythms show large variation, and any influences either on the regulation of responses to temperature or on the regulation of rhythmic responses will affect fish recruitment and populations. Thus, the work forms an important new aspect to understanding the regulation of fish stocks.'
The positions will start either 1. September 2012 or as negotiated (preferably by 1. January 2013). Although the positions are filled for maximally four years, they (especially the postdoctoral fellow position) can be filled for a shorter period, if needed. The salary is fixed according to the guidelines of the University of Turku for teaching and research personnel at the level 4-6 for the postdoctoral fellow (approximately 2400-3700 ?/month) and at the level of 1-3 for the graduate student (approximately 1800-2400 ?/month).
The deadline of applications is July 31, 2012. The applications should be sent by e-mail to Mikko Nikinmaa (miknik@utu.fi) and should contain 1. a free-format letter explaining your interest in the position and 2. CV including publication list. The applicant should also arrange two letters of recommendation to be mailed by the deadline.

Title: "Modern Models in Market Analysis"

Prof. R. Tyrrell Rockafellar, University of Washington and University of Florida, USA
3 lectures
Abstract
The importance of risk measures in the analysis and management of financial assets is well recognized, but new ideas have been developed which further expand the tools that are available. Risk can be modeled also through measures of deviation and regret. Statistical estimation in terms of factor models can be tuned to risk preferences in order to achieve better performance when applied to portfolio optimization. Value-at-risk (VaR) can be supplemented or even replaced by conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) and its mixtures. The CVaR risk measure also is called Expected Shortfall and mixtures of VaRs or CVaRs with different confidence levels are called Spectral Risk Measures. We will discuss advantages and disadvantages of these and other risk measures.
All this can now be placed in a unified framework called the fundamental quadrangle of risk. These lectures will explain this framework on an introductory level, providing many examples of importance in finance and related statistics. In addition to its broad potential in market analysis, the subject opens the way to new research in effective modeling and computation.

Abstract
Risk management involves various risk measures: Variance, Value-at-Risk, Conditional Value-at-Risk, Drawdown, Omega, and others. This part of the course is focused on comparative analysis of risk measures in portfolio optimization setting. We will discuss statistical stability of estimates of risk measures and inputs needed for portfolio optimization. We will present and explore portfolio optimization techniques with various tail risk measures. We will consider both long and short positions in the portfolio optimization settings.

KEY OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
Observe pros and cons of various risk measures
Learn efficient optimization settings and approaches with tail risk measures
Portfolio optimization statements with various risk measures and constraints
In-sample vs out-of-sample portfolio optimization runs
Understand when portfolio optimization approaches can (and cannot) be used
Learn about interface of optimization and statistics (e.g., statistics problems with constraints)
Hand on experience in financial optimization case studies
