The Department for Nonlinear Phenomena of the Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, is seeking a Graduate Student in physics to pursue experimental and theoretical studies on anisotropic fluids. The research topic is the structural and dynamical investigation of labyrinthine instabilities in thin liquid crystal films
(http://www.pro-physik.de/Phy/pdfs/Dezember-2005-01.htm), within a project funded by the DFG (two year contract with option to prolongate for a third year). This position provides an outstanding opportunity to for interdisciplinary research in the areas of Soft Matter, Interfacial Physics and Physical Chemistry. Experimental facilities for optical as well as electron and atomic-force microscopy techniques are available.
Required Education Experience and Skills

Qualified applicants should hold a Diploma/Master Degree in physics or related fields. Knowledge of English or German languages is compulsory.
Preference will be given to applicants with
• Solid knowledge in Optics and Condensed Matter Physics
• Practical knowledge of microscopic techniques, interference methods, image processing
• Ability to conduct research independently
