A modern city was allowed to thrive and became home to an ever-increasing number of people. In Russia, more than seventy percent of the population is concentrated in urban areas. In other countries this proportion is even greater. Life in the urban environment in many ways is not always conducive to wellness and productivity these days, and poses risks to our health and well being. Those risks are primarily associated with pollution: chemically altered composition of water, air pollution, formation of landfill sites, noise pollution, etc. As it stands, current situation has led to a total lack of control of the process of urbanization in many countries, making eco-lifestyle a popular alternative. This new lifestyle represents a wide range of eco-friendly practices of the general population, united by the environmental awareness, and the idea of human responsibility for the environment. This article outlines such trends as eco-tourism, the emergence of eco-settlements, eco-cities, as well as eco-countires.
