The purpose of this paper is to systematize and summarize the results of recent research into the development of innovation companies on early stages of their existence. The authors pay particular attention to the problem of defining early stages of innovation. The paper highlights a number of key characteristics that describe innovation process at early stages, and showcases a wide list of internal and external factors of innovation companies’ development. The paper also provides an overview of theoretical and empirical works that allow the authors to mark out national and regional factors of innovation companies’ development.
