Gregg Bucken-Knapp

Ph.D., Associate Professor in Political Science Senior, lecturer in Public Administration, School of Public Administration, University of Gothenburg.

Gregg Bucken-Knapp earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from The George Washington University (Washington, DC) in 1999, with a specialization in comparative politics.

Bucken-Knapp’s broad research interest is comparative public policy. His current research explores how mainstream Nordic political parties formulate their entry and integration policy preferences regarding migrants, with an emphasis on the role of party ideology as an explanatory factor. He has been awarded multiple international research grants, including funding from the Swedish Research Council (together with Dr. Johan Karlsson Schaffer) to study the role of ideas in shaping Nordic prostitution policies, and a grant from the Danish Research Agency to examine how institutionalizing cross-border cooperation in the Danish-Swedish Öresund region had an impact on levels of national identity held by regional inhabitants. He has also been the recipient of a Fulbright Grant for research into the politicization of language conflict in modern Norway.

Bucken-Knapp is a member of the Gothenburg Migration Research Group (GMRG), together with Professor Jonas Hinnfors and Dr. Andrea Spehar (Department of Political Science, GU). Over the past several years, the GMRG team has developed a strong record of international publications, including the anthology "The Discourses and Politics of Migration in Europe" (Palgrave, 2013) , a recent article in "Journal of European Public Policy", and a 2015 special issue of "Comparative European Politics" focusing on mainstream European political parties and migration policy. GMRG also serves as the Swedish research team in the international research project "Imagination: Urban Implications and Governance of CEE Migration" (2013–2016) / "Urban Europe Joint Programming Initiative" (Swedish funding provided by Formas). He is also the author of "Defending The Swedish Model: Social Democrats", "Trade Unions and Labor Migration Policy Reform" (Lexington: 2009).

Expert Evaluator: European Commission FP7: Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities, Large-scale Integrating Projects; Polish National Centre for Research and Development: Polish-Norwegian Research Programme Grant Scheme; Luxembourg National Research Fund: Multi-annual research program CORE 2012, Aides à la Formation-Recherche (AFR) PhD and Postdoc Grant Scheme.
