The Laboratory carries out research work sponsored by the Russian Fund for Basic Research (RFBR), various federal and scientific-technical programs, the President of Russia support program for leading scientific schools and for individual young scientists. A number of applied research projects are carried out by state contracts and individual agreements with various governmental organizations and private enterprises.

Scientific contacts
The Laboratory cooperates with other departments (Hydrology; Geomorphology and Palaeogeography; Cartography and Geoinformatics) and scientific laboratories (Complex Mapping; Snow Avalanches and Debris Flows) of the MSU Faculty of Geography, and with Faculties of Soil Science, Physics and Geology.
The Laboratory is a leading organization of The Interinsitutional Scientific Council on Erosion, River Channel and Mouth Processes. The Council includes over 60 universities, academies and institutes from Russia, CIS states, Poland, Serbia and China.
The Laboratory actively participates in the Section of river channel research and river reclamation of the Russian Academy of Water Resource Sciences.
Active cooperation is maintained with institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Institutes of Water Problems, Geography, Oceanology, Geoecology) and Academy's regional branches, State Hydrological Institute (Saint Petersburg), regional research institutes (agricultural and hydrometeorological).
The Laboratory hosts national and international conferences, workshops and seminars. Actively developing international contacts are established with colleagues from USA, Poland, China, Australia, Germany, CIS countries, Lithuania, UK, Norway.
In 2007 the 10th International Symposium on River Sedimentation (3-annual meeting organized by the World Association on Sediment and Erosion Research – WASER) was carried out in the Moscow State University with the Laboratory as the main organizing body.

Educational activities
Lecture courses "River channel processes", "Erosion and channel processes", "Water engineering surveys", special course "Gully erosion" and practical sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students from the Faculty of Geography annually take part in summer fieldworks carried out by the Laboratory. The Laboratory staff takes part in supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Dissertations
12 Doctor of Geography and more than 50 Ph.D. dissertations have been prepared in the Laboratory, including authors from China, Lithuania, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
