Globalization and restructuring Russian higher education in line with the Bologna Process were instrumental in the transition from single, one-toone to mass training in applied linguistics which resulted in pushing literary studies to the periphery of training standards and programmes. It brought about the necessity for finding new methods of teaching literature to students of modern languages and new ways of forming their philological competence and developing their philological background knowledge.
