Department of Mycology and Algology

The Department of Mycology and Algology of Moscow State University was founded in 1918 on the basis of a Laboratory of Lower Plants in the Department of Botany.

The first Head of the Department was Professor Lev Ivanovich Kursanov (1877-1954). His main research directions were cytology, physiology of fungi and algae, and ontogenesis. He was the author of textbooks on lower plants and mycology and educational identification keys.

From 1954 the Department was headed by Michael Vladimirovich Gorlenko (1908-1994) who specialised in phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria. He was the author of textbooks on phytopathology and phytoimmunity. The current Head of Department is Yuri Tarichanovich Dyakov. His special fields are physiology and genetics of phytopathogenic fungi and phytoimmunity; genetics and selection of edible fungi.
