(Oscillatoria limosa Ag.,
Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dang., Dunaliella salina Teod.) и неподвижных
(Nostoc muscorum Ag., Chlorella vulgaris Beijer.)

Algae of French Polynesia by C. Payri, A. de R. N'Yeurt & J. OrempЭller.
320 pages full color. Size : 15 x 22 cm. Price : $75 plus shipping
(Stateside around $5.00)
Algae are a very important part of coral reef ecology, and many species are
important food sources for fish, marine invertebrates and even humans. With
some 118 islands ranging from volcanic islands to atolls, French Polynesia
offers a rich range of habitats for a variety of beautiful algae. Profusely
illustrated with striking underwater photographs, this book provides a
simple yet powerful guide to identifying some species of this vital but
often overlooked part of the marine ecosystem. Simple keys and anatomical
diagrams are provided to further help in the identification process, as
well as some general information on algae and their role in marine ecology.
This book will be most useful to marine ecologists, taxonomists, or simply
the layperson wishing to learn more about this exciting aspect of marine
life.

Paracer, S. & Ahmadjian, V. Symbiosis, an introduction to biological
associations. Second edition. Oxford University Press (2000). ISBN
(Hardcover) 0-19-511806-5. Paperback 0-19-511807-3.
Over a year ago I asked members of the list to send their reprints to my
colleagues when they started to revise their book "Symbiosis". Our
thankstothose of you who provided information. The second edition has now
been published. This is much more than a revision of the first edition as
newtopics have been added. The result is a comprehensive review that
coversviruses, bacteria, fungi and algae that form parasitic or
mutualisticbiological associations with protozoa, animals and plants. The
firstchapterintroduces and defines symbiosis. There are twelve chapters,
each of whichreviews a specific area of study and two chapters that explore
the broadertopics of behavioral and social concepts of symbiosis and the
evolutionaryconsequences of symbiosis. The historical perspective is
covered, as wellasthe molecular biology of infectious diseases. This book
should be useful asareference source or a textbook for students or
scientists interested in themolecular and evolutionary aspects of this
subject. Phycologists would beinterested in the discussion of algal
associations with plants, animals and fungi as well as viruses of algae. A
possible role of Prochloron-like organisms in the origin of photosynthetic
organelles is also presented.

Coral Reefs of the Indian OceanTheir Ecology and Conservation
Edited by TIM R. MCCLANAHAN, Wildlife Conservation Society, CHARLES R.
C.SHEPPARD, University of Warwick, and DAVID O. OBURA, Wildlife
Conservation Society
Accessible and complex, coral reefs are ideal natural laboratories for
studying a wide range of ecological and biological questions.
Thiscollection focuses on the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, which contain
someof the most spectacular reefs found anywhere and which are relatively
littlestudied. It will appeal to a broad range of researchers in ecology
and willbe an essential resource for anyone studying reefs.

Fuego). 2000. 205 Tafeln mit 3099 Figuren. 671 S. gr8vo. Hardcover. DM 340.
(ISBN 3-904144-20-0)
This book is the first comprehensive diatom analysis of the Andes from
Venezuela to Patagonia / Tierra del Fuego. Almost everywhere, even in
supposed isolated areas and extreme altitudes, cosmopolitan diatoms have
been found, which are also typical for Europe resp. the Holarctic.
Remarkably some of the well known cosmopolitans from the Holarctic have not
been found in the Andes. There are however a number of cosmopolitan diatoms
from the southern hemisphere resp. the Andes, which are lacking in Europe.
This seems to be one of the main differences between the Andean and
European species - associations. Another difference is the discovery of new
species all over the Andes. The diatom associations in the Andes differ not
only regionally very much, but even quite often locally. This volume
illustrates 3040 taxa for the Andes on photographic plates. 84 taxa have
been described as new, some of them bound to altitudes above 3600 m only.
56 other taxa found seem to be new to science, too. The present book will
be a starting point for further investigation. - The two additional
contributions in this volume deal with the following subjects: 1) Diploneis
ovalis sensu stricto und Diploneis krammeri nov. sp. Revision des aktuellen
Konzepts von Diploneis ovalis (Hilse) Cleve. Von Horst Lange - Bertalot &
Erwin Reichhardt/ 2) Transfer to the generic rank of Decussata Patrick as a

KILLER ALGAE The True Tale of a Biological Invasion
Alexandre Meinesz
Two decades ago, a Stuttgart zoo imported a lush, bright green seaweed for
its aquarium. Caulerpa taxifolia was captively bred by the zoo and exposed,
for years, to chemicals and ultraviolet light. Eventually a sample of it
found its way to the Oceanographic Institute in Monaco. It was first
identified in the wild on rocks in the sea below the Institute. This
supposedly benign little plant--that no one thought could survive the
waters of the Mediterranean--now covers 10,000 acres of the coasts of
France, Spain, Italy, and Croatia, and has devastated the Mediterranean
ecosystem. And it continues to grow, unstoppable and toxic. The plant has
defeated the French Navy, thwarted scientific efforts to halt its rampage,
and continues its destructive journey into the Adriatic Sea. Killer Algae
is the biological and political horror story of this invasion. Part
detective story and part bureaucratic object lesson, it describes a classic
case of a devastating ecological invasion and how not to deal with it. 352
pages, 8 col plates, 5 line illus, 7 maps.
