Dean of Physics

Nikolay Nikolaevich SYSOEV is a physicist, graduated from the Machine Building Department of the Bauman Moscow state Technical University in 1972. Since that time he is with the Faculty of Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University. His research interests are in the fields of Molecular Physics, Physical Hydro- and Gas-dynamics, Physics of Explosion Processes. He received his PhD in 1980 and Dr. of Sciences in 1995, both in Physics. He become a Full Professor in 1998 and a head of the Chair of Molecular Physics in 2002. Since 1991 Prof. Sysoev is a director of the Center for Hydro-Physical Research. He served as a vice-dean of Physics for Research (1998-2011) and become in 2011 the Dean of Physics. He also serves at the Scientific Councils of the Faculty of Physics (since 1992) and Lomonosov Moscow State University (1996), of two Scientific Councils for PhD/Dr. Sci defense with MSU (since 2000). Since 2000 Prof. Sysoev serves on the directors board of the Scientific Park of the MSU and since 2002 as chair of the Commission for Research of the MSU Scientific Council. In 2001-2002 he used to serve as an advisor of the minister of the Russian Ministry for Science and Technologies and since 2013 serves as a member of the Expert Council for the Military-Industrial Complex at the Russian Government. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the editorial board of the Moscow University Physics Bulletin journal and an editorial boar member of the Physical Education in Higher Education Institutes Journal. He is also a chair of the Methodological Council on Physics of the Methodological Union on Classical University Education in Russia.

A bit of history

Physics started at Lomonosov Moscow State University (Imperator Moscow University that time) in 1755, the year when it was founded by the decree of the emperatress Elizaveta Petrovna at the Day of St. Tatiana on 25th of January. This project was prepared by a great Russian scientist, Mikhail Lomonosov, whose name the University started to bear later on in the the Soviet time, and supported by Igor Shuvalov, the kamerginer at the court of Elizaveta Petrovna. The University was founded consisting three faculties--Philosophy, Medical, and Law. The chair of Physics experimental and theoretical was one of the four other chairs in the frame of the Faculty of Philosophy. In 1850 a Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was created with the Moscow University, and later on, in 1933—the Faculty of Physics.

Great Russian scientists, professors of Lomonosov Moscow State University were at the roots of modern Physics. Among them are Prof. A.G.Stoletov who discovered the laws of the photoeffect, Prof. N.A.Umov wgo derived for the first time general equations for the motion of energy (so called Emov-Pointing equation), Prof. P.N.Lebedev who discovered and experimentally measured for the first time the pressure of light on solid state and gases. These scientists received a world-wide recognition and founded schools of Physics at Lomonosov Moscow State University. Since last century, dozens and dozent of great Russian scientists used to work and some still work at the Faculty, just to name S.I.Vavilov, A.A.Vlasov, R.V.Khokhlov, N.N.Bogolyubov, A.N.Tikhonov, L.V.Keldysh, V.A.Magnitsky, G.T.Zatsepin, A.A.Logunov, A.R.Khokhlov, V.G.Kadyshevsky, A.A.Slavnov, V.P.Maslov, and many others. Eight of them received Nobel Prize (academicians I.E.Tamm, I.M.Frank, L.D.Landau, A.M.Prokhorov, P.L.Kapitsa, V.L.Ginzburg, A.A.Abrikosov, and A.D.Sakharov).

Faculty of Physics today

Faculty of Physics at Lomonosov Moscow State University is the best education in Physics in Russia and the world-class scientific research. The faculty hosts 40 chairs that are combined in 8 divisions (experimental and theoretical physics, applied mathematics, solid state physics, radiophysics, nuclear physics, geophysics, astronomy, and complimentary education) and which offer world-class fundamental education and scientific research in almost all fields of modern experimental and theoretical physics from elementary particles and nanophysics to life sciences, geophysics, and space research. Plus to that, the faculty offers courses on engineering physics and management of research and high technologies.

Scientific research is conducted both at the Faculty of Physics and at the various research Institutes of Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as in close collaboration with many key universities in Russia and in Europe, USA, Asia, and Australia.

Since 1933, over 25000 specialists in Physics received their diploma with the Faculty of Physics and over 4000 and 500 our graduates were awarded PhD and Doctor of Sciences by the Faculty, respectively. Every third member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the field of Physics, Geophysics, and astronomy is our graduate; 8 our graduates and/or professors were awarded Nobel prizes; 38 our professors were awarded Lenin prize and over 170 - State award for scientific achievements.

Our graduates demonstrate very good skills in Physics, show wide range of interests in Science and are highly valued both in Russia and abroad, which allow them easily find a job either in Science or in any other area of human activities that fit their wishes and expectations. This is why our graduates are taking top positions not only in Science, but in management, consulting, banking, industry, etc.
