In this article the problem of social order in the history of sociological thought is being analyzed. The author describes scientific dispute between a functionalism and the conflict theory. The theory of the conflict proceeds from belief that society always contains fundamental conflicts of interest and that social order is achieved by balance of power in which the interests of the stronger successfully contain and channel the demands of the weaker. But this model also enables us to see that social order is essentially precarious and that the likely consequence of struggles to alter the balance of power is social change.
