Подробнее о теме диссертации на английском:

Phd Proposition

Title : Electron spectroscopy and atom probe.
Laboratory: Groupe de physique des matériaux (GPM), University of Rouen, France
Team : Equipe d'instrumentation (ERIS) du Groupe de Physique des Matériaux (GPM)
Contact : Angela Vella (angela.vella@univ-rouen.fr), A. Hideur (hideur@coria.fr)

Activities at the GPM laboratory are centered on investigating the link between material properties and their features at the nanometer scale. One of the laboratory's 6 teams is the 'advanced instrumentation team' (ERIS) where the ultra fast laser assisted Atom Probe Tomography was developed in the 1990s. ERIS is one of the world's leading teams in the development of laser assisted 3D atom probes, in particular concerning field evaporation processes and laser matter interaction in nanoscaled structures[1-2].
This powerful technique allows the 3D imaging of nanometric tips, subjected to a high potential and illuminated by fs laser pulses. However, this imaging technique reaches today its limits due to the complexity of the physical mechanisms involved in the laser matter interaction at the nanoscale in ultrafast regime [3]. To overcome these severe limitations, one needs new physical information on the electron distributions before and after the laser interaction and on the surface defects' contribution to the light absorption. The combination of 3D atomic scale mapping with in-situ, time resolved, electron energy spectroscopy, will allow to access simultaneously at the electronic and structural properties of the probed sample.
Furthermore, nanometer tips, subjected to a high voltage and illuminated by fs laser pulses, are also used recently as electrons sources, when polirazed negatively. The recent development of these pulsed electron sources is a research topic very popular because of their possible use in time-resolved imaging [4] but also because these sources are a new system for studying the effects of quantum optics [5-6]. Several mechanisms for the electron emission have been highlighted depending on the characteristics of the laser pulse (mainly its fluence) [7]. Different mechanisms lead to ejection of the electron beams with distinct temporal and spectral properties.
During these PhD work, a setup for electron spectroscopy will be installed inside a typical atom probe chamber. The spectral properties of the different emissive sites on the tip will be studied (coupling of spatial and spectral characterizations) as well as their dependence on the laser parameters (polarization , illumination). Samples going from metal to dielectric tip will be analysed, with a particular focus on key materials of microelectronics.
Besides, the study of the energy of the emitted electrons may provide new information on the laser-nanotip interaction, which will be crucial for the development and improvement of the atom probe tomography. This study is a part of the ASAP project LABEX EMC3.

This pioneer work will be done in collaboration with the CORIA expert in laser sources, but also with French and international laboratories CEMES/LCAR (Toulouse), ULB (Brussels), Dalhousie University (CANADA).

В университет г. Тренто в одну из лидирующих мировых групп по профильному анализу микроструктуры срочно требуется аспирант! Знание языков программирования обязательно.

Faculty of Engineering - Doctoral School in Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering
Fully Funded PhD Studentship
Analysis of stacking disorder and order/disorder transformations

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship (3 years) in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering at the Universi ty of Trento (Italy). The aim of the research is to study disorderedmaterials using diffraction techniques (including RTOF diffraction). The candidate will develop new tools and apply them to the study ofmaterials showing stacking disorder. Stacking defects are quite common in several classes of materials and in industrially relevant cases they are the true responsible for enhanced properties. The analysis of the powder diffraction patterns is complicated by the presence of diffuse scattering: a new algorithm has been recently developed in Trento to simulate those effects formaterials showing 2D to 3D periodicity in the lattice. A further development of the algorithms is in progress, but no software is currently available to process the data in a fast and reliable way. The new tools will be applied to the analysis of some real materials (superconductors, thermoelectrics, battery materials, pharmaceuticals, catalysts). Alternative interesting research programs, may beconsidered (please contact Prof. Leoni i n advance). A student with a curriculum in Computer science, Physics, Materials science/engineering, Mineralogy, Earth Sciences, Crystallography or Chemistry would be preferred. Experience in C++ language and/or GPU programming is highly desirable. The student should have a Master degree earned before October 31 2014. The student will work under the supervision of Prof. Matteo Leoni. The annual stipend is 13.638,47 Euro net. Extra benefits include e.g. a generous contribution for residence and discounted transportation. No tuition fees or teaching duties required. The studentship is expected to start in November 2014 but due to the internal procedures, contact and start of the application should
be made before the end of July 2014.

Informal enquiries prior to making an application may be addressed to: Prof. Matteo Leoni

Post-Doc and PhD Positions at the Institute of Evolution, University of Haifa, Haifa, Israel We are looking for independent, motivated, diligent, laborious, dedicated post-doctorate fellows for revealing the mechanisms of cancer-resistance and anti-cancer activity of the hypoxia-tolerant subterranean, blind mole-rat, Spalax. Our project has captured the interest of the scientific community and we have ample financial support for the studies. Generous fellowships ($30K to $40K according to qualifications and performance) are available, immediately, for experts in bioinformatics with a background of fully understanding biological questions, and for 'wet/bench' work, highly experienced in working with tissue culture, protein biochemistry and nude mice methodologies. Training in cancer research is an advantage. Experience of writing manuscripts for publication and solid publication record are expected. English skills both oral and written are required. American, Western-European or Israeli education is a benefit. Outstanding candidates for PhD studies will also be considered ($20K to $27K according to qualifications and performance). Scientific background: We are working with the hypoxia-tolerant (down to 3% O2), long-lived (>20 years) subterranean blind mole-rat, Spalax, which shows an outstanding cancer-resistance and anti-cancer capabilities. Observations of thousands of individuals at our Institute have never noticed a spontaneous malignant tumor. Furthermore, we have found in Spalax different structure and function of major genes related to cancer (p53, heparanase, genes of antioxidant defense and DNA-repair genes). Assessment of Spalax transcriptome assembly and expression data has revealed enrichment of genes that overlap cancer resistance, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and hypoxiatolerance and elicits much wider and stronger expression in Spalax than in rat (Malik et al, 2012, BMC genomics, 13, 615). Moreover, Spalax has shown extremely high cancer-resistance to chemical carcinogens that induced cancer in 100% of mice and rats. Most intriguing, fibroblast cells only from Spalax, but not from other species, inhibit growth and kill cancer cells, but not normal cells, from various tissues and species, most importantly a wide range of human cancer cells. This is exhibited in both co-culture system or by exposure to factors secreted into conditioned media harvested from Spalax fibroblasts. Decreased cancer cell viability and proliferation, reduced colony formation in soft agar, disturbed cell cycle progression, chromatin condensation, nuclei deformation and mitochondrial fragmentation were reproducibly observed (Manov et al., 2013, BMC biology 11, 91). Our present objectives is to identify and isolate the substances secreted by Spalax cells, resolve with which components they interact that are active only on cancer cells, in order to unravel the biological mechanisms and pathways that evolved in Spalax cell machinery and ultimately lead to the death of cancer-cells.. The study may attest to be a breakthrough in the conservative paradigm of cancer research, completely dependent on laboratory, inbred rodents. Achieving this goal will open new horizons in cancer studies, and may prove that the long lived, hypoxia- and cancertolerant Spalax is a significant biological resource to biomedical research as an organism for treatment and prevention of cancer in humans.

PhD position in the Institute of Physiology, University of Zurich

We invite applications for a PhD student position in the Institute of Physiology of the University of Zurich.

Project description: Several SLC34 sodium/phosphate cotransporters control the levels of phosphate in the blood in mammals. Mutations in these plasma membrane proteins have been identified in patients with disturbed mineral metabolism resulting, among other alterations, in pulmonary or renal calcifications as well as abnormal bone growth and stability. The PhD project aims at understanding how mutations in the sodium/phosphate cotransporters result in pathological states. Several methodological approaches will be combined to analyze the effect of the mutations: cotransporter sorting/subcellular expression (epithelial cells in culture), cotransporter activity (tracer transport in oocytes from Xenopus laevis) and systemic compensatory changes (animal models). All required methods are routinely used in the lab, and our Institute has a long tradition in the study of epithelial transport. For further information, see http://www.physiol.uzh.ch/research/Acidbasetransport.html
The student has to be enrolled in the Integrative Molecular Medicine (imMed, http://www.zihp.uzh.ch/teaching/phd-program.html%29 PhD program, in the Life Science Zurich Graduate School, provided that she/he passes the required standards. The imMed is a multidisciplinary program lasting for 3 years and offers graduate courses, annual retreats and symposia.

Qualification: We are looking for highly motivated students, holding a Master degree in Biology, Biotechnology or equivalent. Acceptance into the PhD program is subject to the full recognition of the master degree by the University of Zurich. Candidates should be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Starting date: October 2014

Contact: Dr. Carsten A. Wagner (wagnerca@access.uzh.ch), Dr. Nati Hernando (hernando@physiol.uzh.ch)

Post-doctoral fellowship at CEA Cadarache, France

Regulation of photosynthetic energy conversion and storage in microalgae. A two to three-year post-doctoral fellowship (starting October 1st) is open in the Laboratory of Microalgal Bioenergetics and Biotechnology (Lab website : http://www-dsv.cea.fr/lb3m) of the French Atomic and Alternative energy Commission, located at CEA Cadarache (southern France nearby Aix-en-Provence).The laboratory develops genetic and physiological approaches to study regulatory mechanisms of solar energy conversion and storage by microalgae using Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model organism. Several mutants of interest, affected in the light energy conversion efficiency or in storage abilities (as starch or oil) have been isolated from previous screens, and are currently studied in the laboratory (see publication list). A mutant affected in the cross talk between photosynthesis and reserve metabolism has been recently isolated in the lab. This mutant is impaired in a kinase belonging to a newly described DYRK kinase family (DYRK-P) specific to the green lineage (see http://www.genetics-gsa.org/chlamydomonas/2014/abstracts/fulltext/f145210133.htm).

The aim of the post-doc will be to identify molecular components involved in the signalling cascade controlled by the Chlamydomonas DYRK-P kinase. For this purpose, a combination of genetic, physiological and biochemical approaches will be developed.

The laboratory harbours a platform (http://www-heliobiotec.cea.fr) equipped with different state-of-the-art techniques including high-throughput screening (flow cytometer, fluorescence video imaging system for mutant screening), photosynthesis measurement (PAM for chlorophyll fluorescence, JTS for absorption changes, MIMS for gas exchange measurements...), biomass productivity measurements (4 instrumented photo-bioreactors operated as turbidostats), lipid analysis (HP-TLC, GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC-MS-qTOF...), confocal microscopy, and current molecular biology and biochemistry techniques.

Required experience: A recent Ph. D (preferably obtained in 2013 or 2014) in plant molecular biology or microbiology with a strong background in biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. A previous experience on Chlamydomonas molecular biology will be appreciated but is not essential.

I am looking for a PhD student to work on an exciting research project focused on the development of the novel 2D liquid composites for application in the integrated optoelectronic devices on Si platform. The funding comes from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Metamaterials (XM2) at the University of Exeter and covers full tuition fee, stipend and conference travelling. The project overview and funding details are attached. And this is the web-link:

I would appreciate if you could bring this to the attention of the final year BSc and MSc students you might know. Thank you very much.Application deadline is January 10th, 2015 and students can contact me directly.

Best,

Dr. Anna Baldycheva
Assistant Professor
EPSRC Centre for Graphene Science
College of Engineering, Mathematics & Physical Sciences
University of Exeter
Harrison building
North Park Road
EX4 4QF
Exeter, UK

telephone: +44(0)1392 722796
email: a.baldycheva@exeter.ac.uk

Project Overview:
The PhD student will have the opportunity to do an international level research focused on the design, fabrication and characterization of the graphene liquid crystal (GLC) microfluidic metamaterials as well as of plasmonic structures and devices integrated on Si platform. This project will focus on the development and investigation of the novel class of 2D material based liquid crystal composites and their application in the integrated hybrid micro-electronic and micro-photonic devices and systems on Si platform. GLC materials [Nature Materials 13, 394(2014)] may become one of the most promising class of hybrid fluid composites for the fabrication of metamaterials and for the realization of on-chip tunable metadevices. The unique electrical, optical and magnetic properties of GLC materials arise from the combination of the outstanding properties of graphene and the liquid crystal's fluidic nature and electro-optical characteristics. However, the research studies on the application of optically- and electrically- reconfigurable GLC ashybrid metamaterials are very limited. In particularly, to the best of our knowledge, the application of GLC composites in passive or active metadevices on the integrated Si platform was not demonstrated in theory or experiment. This makes the research topic of the PhD project to be truly unique.
Eligibility:
Funding is available for well-qualified students: Full tuition fee, stipend (£13,863 in 2014-15) and travel funding of £1,500 per year.

The University of Exeter is a top 10 UK university, and a member of the elite Russell Group of institutions. It was named University of the Year in The Sunday Times University Guide 2013 and is in 8th place in The Sunday Times league table for 2014. Recent capital projects to the value of GBP 350 million across the University ensure a truly world-class research and teaching environment and inspirational location to work and live. The EPSRCCentre for Doctoral Training in Metamaterials (XM2) is hosted by the University of Exeter, and located entirely in the Engineering and Physics buildings on the Streatham Campus.
