Division of Geophysics.

The Section of Geophysical Sciences train students in "Geophysical methods of prospecting" (qualification "geologist-geophysicist"). There are five specializations: "Seismic survey", "Electric survey", "Gravity and magnetic survey", "Engineering geophysics and marine geophysics".

In the "Seismic survey" students take courses in theory, methodology and techniques of seismic survey. They combine studying of the basic geological sciences with mathematics, physics, mechanics, radioelectronics, mathematics, programming, etc. Special attention is paid to the computer studies.

Seismic survey is most widely used in search for and exploration of oil and gas deposits, in studying history of sedimentation, in search for ground waters, in archeological investigations and environmental problem solution.

In the "Electric survey" students take courses in theory of variable electromagnetic fields in one and two dimensions heterogeneous environments, in data processing and interpretation electromagnetic sounding waves with the help of computers. They study methods of electric survey data interpretation for the solution of depth, structural, ore and engineering tasks.

Students specializing in "Gravity and magnetic survey" study deeply the theory of potential fields and solve complex direct and reverse tasks of gravity and electrical survey. They study new equipment and methodology, they deal with computer data processing and geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic data to carry out depth, structural and ore (field and marine) investigations.

Students specializing in "Engineering geophysics", take the courses in engineering geology, hydrogeology and geocryology, special courses in seismic and electric surveys and geophysical well investigations. Great attention is paid to the creation of complex geological-geophysical approach to geological engineering, geocryological and hydrogeological investigations.

Specialization of "Marine geophysics" has been set up at the geological section recently and it is connected with the necessity for the search for mineral resources in the World Ocean waters. Students of this specialization besides the fundamental knowledge in the field of precise sciences and basic programming also study all the geophysical methods used in marine investigations and have their practical field work on the scientific-research vessels.
