Aleksanteri Institute Visiting Scholars Programme Aleksanteri Visiting Fellowships 2013­2014
THE FELLOWSHIP Is intended for scholars who hold a PhD degree in a field relevant to the Aleksanteri Institute's research agenda and whose place of residence i s outside of Finland Is for a period of two to three months between August 2013 and June 2014 Involves a research stay at the Aleksanteri Institute, during which Visiting Fellows are expected to be present a t the Aleksanteri Institute and to participate actively in its research community Offers an opportunity to conduct research and benefit from interaction with the Russian and Eastern European studies community in Finland Holders must contribute to the advancement of Russian and Eastern European studies in general and to the research agenda of the Aleksanteri Institute in particular Holders should make at least one presentation on their research in the Aleksanteri Institute Visiting Fellows Research Seminar series and, preferably, also contribute to the Institute's publications and seminars Carries a monthly grant of 2600 to cover all expenses related to the stay in Helsinki (such as accommodation, travel, insurance, visas, etc.) Provides Visiting Fellows with office space and the use of a computer, as well as use of the Institute's in-house library and other University of Helsinki libraries, including e-libraries and the Slavonic Library APPLICATIONS Are to be sent by 22 February, 2013 (by 23:59 GMT +2) for the period of August 2013­June 2014 Consist of two parts: 1. An electronic application form 2. Materials that are to be submitted electronically via e-mail Must be written in English HOW TO SUBMIT THE APPLICATION? First, complete and submit an electronic application form, which can be found a t https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/39562/lomake.html Second, send the following material by e-mail to aleksanteri-fellows(at)helsinki.fi: 1. A letter of introduction that states the purpose of the research stay and describes how the Fellowship would contribute to the Applicant's own research and to the research agenda of the Aleksanteri Institute.


2. A research plan of no more than 2500 words. The research plan is to consist of the following parts: · Background and objectives of the research you are working on at the time of the proposed visit · Research methods and material · Work plan for the proposed visit that spe cifies which part of the research you intend to carry out during the research visit. This should also include information on the specific type of work you are planning to do (for example, wor king on an article or a book manuscript, analysing data, collecting material, using library or archival sources). · Bibliography 3. The applicant's CV, which may be a maximum of four pages in length 4. A list of relevant publications Please check that all the required application documents have been submitted, including the electronic form and the materials sent via e-mail. Both parts must be sent no later than 22 February 2013 (by 23:59 GMT+2). Applications with missing documents cannot be considered for selection. Please note that if, subsequent to an applicant being selected as a Visiting Fellow, the research plan presented in the application changes considerably, a new research plan must be approved before the applicant may take up the Fellowship appointment. Aleksanteri Visiting Fellows Alumni We wish to continue working with previous Aleksanteri Visiting Fellows who have established research contacts with colleagues in Finland. A part of the total 25-30 monthly fellowships will be allocated for Aleksanteri Visiting Fellows Alumni. Notification of Applicants and Evaluation of Applications The selection of Fellows will be concluded by 10 April 2013 and the names of the Aleksanteri Visiting Fellows will be published on the Institute's website on 15 April 2013. The applications are evaluated by three experts. Feedback on the applications will not be provided and only successful applicants will be personally notified of the result. Practical Matters Please note that the Fellowship is a grant, not a salary, and is therefore no t subject to Finnish taxation. Accordingly, Fellows are not staff members of the University of Helsinki and, consequently, are not entitled to University of Helsinki staff benefits, such as insurance and occupational health care. Because Fellows are not covered by the University's insurance policy, they are expected to make arrangements for their own health and medical insurance and to provide proof of a valid insurance policy when beginning their Fellowship term. The Aleksanteri Institute will assist successful applicants with practical arrangements and in finding accommodation. The Institute cannot, however, guarantee to provide the desired accommodation.
